Words and phrases that you can't stand...

What words and phrases irrationally (or rationally!) annoy you.

Mine are:
'Doggo' - DP uses this all the time, why make the word 'dog' longer
'No is a complete sentence' - just sounds so dismissive and I doubt anyone IRL would talk like this
'That doesnt work for us' - just sounds rude
'Little man' to describe a boy
'Hubby' - this is irrational as loads of people say this
'Boils my piss' - conjours horrible images in my head Grin
'Move on' when talking about a bad situation - yeah, because the person with the problem really hasn't thought about that Hmm...
'It is what it is' - one if those phrases that seemed to spawn from Love Island, I dont know why I hate it.

Any more?

I’ve got loads!

  • Whistle stop tour - they say it all the time at work & I HATE it. ‘Apologies, I know that was a bit of a whistle stop tour...’ Angry
  • Generally instead of genuinely.
  • Segue.
  • Stay safe, stay well.
  • At least... so dismissive of whatever has been said before this.
  • 110%...why is 100% never enough?!
evilharpy · 18/10/2020 23:22

"Obligated" gives me the rage. It's "obliged".

myotherusernameisonholiday · 18/10/2020 23:23

Pass water (instead of wee). Mostly because I'd never heard the phrase and it was said in a story I was being told. I couldn't understand the story and felt stupid. Therefore I don't like it now Grin

seayork2020 · 18/10/2020 23:27

Individually and when appropriate I do not have any issues with these words but I do hate the over use of

redflag, anxiety, controlling, vulnerable, self-isolating, living my best life, # anything (unless actually using twitter etc.), babe/s and any other word that a normal one would be more appropriate but a new one is invented for no reason

gaslighting (unless you are talking about your central heating/boiler etc. anytime

SkiingIsHeaven · 18/10/2020 23:57

Adults who say awesome

Franticbutterfly · 19/10/2020 00:03

Other half - My DH is not my other half, he is a person and I am person and we are partners...God I sound like nob, but I just hate the phrase even if it just means other half of the couple.

110% Confused

Step up to the plate - What f**king plate? We are British not American!!!

spookmeout · 19/10/2020 00:04

Hate little legs and little man, and any version of hubs, hubby, hubster etc
Also hate bubs, bubba or any derivative

spookmeout · 19/10/2020 00:04

Also the word lil
Fucking hate it

spookmeout · 19/10/2020 00:07

YY to fur baby, it's a fucking pet
I love my dog but she is a dog, not a fur baby

PhilSwagielka · 19/10/2020 00:35

@ViciousJackdaw yep. And if it’s any consolation, ‘murderers’ also makes me cringe. As does ‘bin dippers’.

And I’d like to add ‘do better’ to phrases I hate. You’re not my mum. Piss off.

PhilSwagielka · 19/10/2020 00:36

@TiptopJ

Adults who use the word snitch.
Or ‘dry snitch’. Like Gindaddy.
MistyGreenAndBlue · 19/10/2020 00:44

Lap/lapping it up. Don't know why I just really hate it.
Also dislike "gotten" and "normalcy". Ugh.

PhilSwagielka · 19/10/2020 00:45

I had PhilSwagielka down as a Blade

Ironically, my second team are the other team from Sheffield.
CarrieMoonbeams · 19/10/2020 00:52

Not so much a word, more of a pronunciation issue, but I worked with a team where one of them would say, at least once a day "I'm knackered. Is it Prozeco time yet?" in an attempt to sound all ladylike and coy and like they didn't know how to pronounce Prosecco.

And to the PP who mentioned "get to fuck", it's a splendid Scottish insult. More tending towards the West, but heard regularly enough here in the South East. Usually pronounced Get tae fuck, or just Get tae!

Feefifofummmm · 19/10/2020 00:59

Boak

MistyGreenAndBlue · 19/10/2020 01:08

"Only on MN." It's like some posters forget that every single person on MN also lives in the real world somewhere.

trixiebelden77 · 19/10/2020 01:19

‘You get what you pay for’......no. Said by very gullible people who don’t recognise marketing when they see it.

Anyone who reports being told they had a ‘1 in 2 chance of dying’ or were ‘ten minutes away from dying’. I’ve been a doctor for 15 years and have never once said this or heard any other dr say it. It’s actually impossible to give these sort of cut and dried numbers.

Have never heard anyone who wasn’t a clear arsehole use ‘woke’ or ‘virtue signalling’.

‘You can’t say anything’, ‘everyone’s so easily offended’, ‘constantly screeching racism’ etc. all phrases used exclusively by racist tools with no insight.

MrsFezziwig · 19/10/2020 01:26

Baby wearing
Cloth bum
Go (eg town, supermarket) - it’s go TO town or go TO THE supermarket

Itsmybirthday19 · 19/10/2020 01:28

Holibobs

Vacation, or worse "vacay"

Hubby

Little man (I only think of penises)

Princess (referring to a daughter: only acceptable if you're Prince Andrew, which is a phrase I never expect to use)

Naughty, in reference to food or a sex act (spoiler: it won't be an interesting one)

Cheeky, in reference to anything except the eponymous Girls, who I have a great deal of time for.

Prosecco made me do it (found on tote bags and magnets throughout the land). Only funny if you write it on your husband. With a sharpie.

Live, laugh, love. I will not.

If you can't handle me at my worst, you don't deserve me at my best. A stupid phrase because of course he doesn't deserve you. You're a dickhead.

FriYAY. FriINHELLYOUUNBEARABLEPRICK

Itsmybirthday19 · 19/10/2020 01:29

Oh god... nom nom nom.

Itsmybirthday19 · 19/10/2020 01:31

I'm shook.... presumably as a child?

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 19/10/2020 01:33

@MrsFezziwig

Baby wearing Cloth bum Go (eg town, supermarket) - it’s go TO town or go TO THE supermarket
Yes; I have a particular horror of the slogan 'Go Argos'. See also - 'Eat healthy'. Could do without 'double down' unless specifically talking about betting. And I absolutely don't hate Americanisms per se, but the steady rise of 'I got mad with OH last night' or 'I'm so pissed at my DD' is very, very irritating.
Itsmybirthday19 · 19/10/2020 01:35

Oh fucking hell, I've just seen "need gone" on this thread.

Need euthanised, more like.

Itsmybirthday19 · 19/10/2020 01:39

Full time mum. Because when I'm at work I revert to my child free, 23yo self. Forget all about the little sods until 5pm. We all do, right? It's like a holiday!

LadyJaye · 19/10/2020 01:43

I have an oddly visceral reaction to the word 'tasty'. I absolutely LOATHE it, for some reason I can't quite fathom.
