It's Sunday morning and my neighbours builders are cutting masonry blocks in the front garden

Would I be unreasonable to go over in my PJs with wild hair and request they STFU? Been going on 30 mins already and woke me up :(

This is on top of months of disruption, vans parked everywhere, mess and lots of noise.

Flipping heck what time did they start? No you wouldn’t be unreasonable. It’s too early .

Lockheart · 18/10/2020 09:12

If it was 7 or 8 I'd say you have a point but 9am is a pretty reasonable lie in.

Sexnotgender · 18/10/2020 09:14

If they’ve started at 8.30 you don’t really have grounds for complaint unfortunately.

Inconsiderate they might be but not much you can do.

WizWoz · 18/10/2020 09:15

Working at 9am is perfectly reasonable. Most people are up by then. Please tell me your secret of how to get a lie in when you’re a mum!

Kerberos · 18/10/2020 09:18

My kids are older. Teenagers are still asleep. 11 year old is watching TV. Been through the 630am wake ups and they're long behind me now :)

What do your local bylaws say?

I'd be working on the theory that the sooner they start, the sooner the project will be finished!

Which is quite apart from the fact I wake up at 5:30 every day. My body doesn't understand the concept of 'weekends'

Hotwaterbottlelove · 18/10/2020 09:19

Well do you want it to take even longer? If they have to stop, the noise will only have to happen on another day. The more hours they use now, the sooner you get peace back.

Mollscroll · 18/10/2020 09:20

Round here there must be no noisy work on a Sunday. Look it up on your council website and then have a word.

Florencex · 18/10/2020 09:20

Night time hours are 11pm - 7am every day of the week. You can’t really complain about noise outside those hours, so yes YABU.

flaviaritt · 18/10/2020 09:20

Don’t think this should be happening on a Sunday.

user1497787065 · 18/10/2020 09:24

This always divides opinion. For me anytime after 6am is acceptable any day of the week. I have a neighbour
who considers 9am too early. She tends to sleep from 2-10am

Our council is the same - no DIY/building noise on Sunday, except for emergencies. Our neighbouring council is 10am - 3 pm on Sunday. Pretty sure most councils say it's not allowed.
SushiGo · 18/10/2020 09:24

You need to check your local Councils rules about reasonable working hours for noise from builders. They are different around the country.

hippohector · 18/10/2020 09:27

Look up the rules for construction hours on your local council website op.
People doing DIY in their own house is different (although still bloody selfish) but contracted workmen must abide by working hour rules. You can report them to the council/noise pollution if necessary.

We had this issue recently and I was surprised to learn that paid workmen are only permitted to make construction noise Mon-Fri 8am-6pm / Sat 9am-1pm and not allowed at all on a Sunday.

Sexnotgender · 18/10/2020 09:29

Interesting, no construction here on a Sunday. Pretty sure the council I lived in previously allowed it.

superram · 18/10/2020 09:30

Most councils don’t allow this on a Sunday but I think there are temporary relaxation of this due to covid. Yanbu to want to do it but I probably wouldn’t.

maddening · 18/10/2020 09:31

Generally all council noise pages refer to building work noise being OK Mon to Fri 8-6 and Sat 9-1 and that they should not make noise on a Sunday. Imo If they need to keep the project running on a Sunday they should handle their own logistics within the project so that quiet aspects of the work are left to the Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Eg. They should have done their cutting yesterday morning so they could just get on with the brisk/block laying today.

Woodlandanimals · 18/10/2020 09:31

I listen to that noise Monday to Saturday 7:30am - 4:30pm in my house while WFH.

Sad
ARealActualKaren · 18/10/2020 09:31

Do you live near me?! Our neighbours started at 8.15am. The rules say 8am on a Sunday. Still fucking rude though.

bluetongue · 18/10/2020 09:33

I’ve had this happen with a tradesman doing work on a building site on my street. I found the local noise laws on the net (no noisy works on Sunday) and showed then to him on my phone. He tried to tell me he ‘didn’t know about that law’. Fair enough if it was DIY but this was his job so I highly doubt that. After grumbling about it he did stop.

Cheeky fuckers will try and bank on nobody complaining.

mrscampbellblackagain · 18/10/2020 09:35

I would speak to them, most areas do not allow professional builders to work on sundays.

Fruitsaladjelly · 18/10/2020 09:37

I own a construction company and we wouldn’t be allowed to do this without a special permit and extensive ‘community engagement‘ in advance of the Morning in question. However it seems DIY gives a pass for all manor of shitty inconsiderate behavior.

Kerberos · 18/10/2020 09:38

I don't want to be googling my local council noise policies on a Sunday morning, I want to be snoozing :(

Anyway, I'm up now and slightly less grumpy as the noise has now stopped.

Just frustrated that it's been going on for months (and months and months...) and looking for a place to vent.

If you happen to live near a motorway they're rebuilding at night @arealactualkaren then yes!

Our ndn began building works at 6.30 am last year for months. Loud radios, diggers etc. The house they built which we were told would be a lovely addition (ha) resembles a mobile/static caravan. No offence to caravan owners at all. Black metal mono one level look is definitely in here. The initial plans were for a traditional house so at least you have breeze blocks. They have now run out of money so it continues in a never ending noisy cycle.

Joking aside, they are really taking the piss. No working Sundays and bank holidays. Could try reporting but it did us no good at all. It seems we all imagined or had the same nightmare.
