Should I let her

My cousin has asked to have use of my address to register with a GP. My GP is a very good one so I can see why she would want to especially as she has a number of health conditions. Aibu to let her use my address? She wouldn’t be using it for anything else.

If ever she needed an emergency visit, or from the district nurse etc, this could be a problem. I realise that probably isn't going to happen for the forseeable, but still...

LIZS · 17/10/2020 18:08

Technically you can register with any gp regardless of where you live. Why your address specifically?

Cabinfever10 · 17/10/2020 18:11

You would very unreasonable. If your cousin lives outwith the gps area she would likely be stopping someone who does live in the area from joining the practice also they won't do home visits.

wineandroses1 · 17/10/2020 18:14

I would not let anyone use my address. She is asking you to collude in a fraud.

Iftheclouds · 17/10/2020 18:15

Home vista here are rarely done unless someone is elderly so I doubt that would be a problem. I’m the only one in the family that is within catchment for this practice.

I don’t see an issue.

I don’t think this is true though? When I moved house my surgery kicked me off the list & told me I had to be within the catchment area for the reasons addressed above (home visits) I can see the logic but was pissed off because it was a great surgery & I was happy to travel Sad but I guess then you’d have everyone flocking to the ‘good’ surgery & they’d be overwhelmed.

But yeah... I’d let her.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 17/10/2020 18:26

If she ever gets admitted to a hospital, she would need to use your address to ensure her GP gets all the info and puts it in her file, and any hospital letters would then be sent to you and not her. If something happened to her and someone else took her in, they'd be giving her real address.

Clevs · 17/10/2020 18:27

What will she do if you decide to move house? And do you not need to show proof of address to register at a surgery?

It's not just home visits either. If she has a baby in the future the midwives may want to visit her house for antenatal appointments.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 17/10/2020 18:27

@LIZS
As the poster above, I was kicked off my GP's list when I moved to a different town. Had to register in the catchment I moved too.

MagnoliaXYZ · 17/10/2020 18:28

No, she should use her address and register herself with a local GP.

Okbutnotgreat · 17/10/2020 18:35

When Dd moved away she was told by our GP practice that she had to reregister with a local GP straight away.

Leeds2 · 17/10/2020 18:37

I would've thought she would have to show proof of address to register at any surgery. And, I presume, she doesn't have that.

Petitmum · 17/10/2020 18:40

I've just registered with a new GP and had to show proof of address. Daft idea to allow them to use your address!

Iftheclouds · 17/10/2020 18:49

I’m not planning on moving house for at least three years yet. I know they do ask for proof of address however the law states that someone not having proof of address Isn’t enough to refuse to register them.

OP posts:
Billben · 17/10/2020 19:17

No way would I do this. Our GP practice is very good. But I don’t sing their praises to anybody outside of our catchment area because I don’t want them flocking there. That would affect me and everybody else already registered at the practice. Does that make me look selfish? Probably yes. But I don’t care one bit when it comes to my health.

But I’m not sure our practice would even take them. Somebody I know didn’t change their address when they moved. Their son broke his leg and when the hospital sent the notes over to the GP practice they saw the address and told the family they can’t use them anymore.

Iftheclouds · 17/10/2020 19:25

Billben this practice does have a large catchment. It’s not. Small practice either. I take it that person was using someone’s address without asking?

OP posts:
Billben · 18/10/2020 08:16

No, they weren’t. It was their old address. They just didn’t tell the GP practice when they had moved.

TheRuleofStix · 18/10/2020 08:20

Definitely not. Fraught with potential problems and a bloody cheeky request Hmm.

Iftheclouds · 18/10/2020 09:17

I would imagine if you use your old address letters go there when you don’t know who lives there. This wouldn’t be the case for my cousin.

OP posts:
Houseplantmad · 18/10/2020 09:20

Please don't. My son can't register at his local GP because they are "full".

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 18/10/2020 09:23

Your posts suggest you've already decided to agree to it so why bother asking?

Iftheclouds · 18/10/2020 09:24

These three doctors surgery’s all very near each other so I doubt any of them will be full.

OP posts:
LIZS · 18/10/2020 09:26

What's wrong with any nearer her actual address?

AriesTheRam · 18/10/2020 09:28

You have to provide a bill or something proving that you live in the area do it might not be as straightforward as you think

AriesTheRam · 18/10/2020 09:28

So not do
