If you own a phone or access the Internet. This documentary is absolutely brilliant and really opened my eyes!

What’s it about

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 18/10/2020 11:52

I watched it the other month and deleted my social media accounts, apart from Instagram and mumsnet Blush.

PeachesTheFlamingo · 18/10/2020 12:06

I watched it. It was ok. I didn't really learn much that I wasn't already aware of. But I suppose it would be an eye opener for people who aren't aware of the tactics FB and Insta use to try and draw users back to their sites day in day out.
I know of one friend who deleted his Facebook account after watching it.

Their tactics don't work for me. I probably have a quick browse (5/10 mins) through FB and Insta each day.
Of course I get the frequent notifications telling me someone has commented on a post I'm tagged in, or someone has posted for the first time in a while... but rather than drawing me back in, I just find these annoying and they reek of desperation (please come back!). I ignore them.

As for the adverts.. FB and Insta are full of them, but it's not different to any other site really. As I type this now on MN, I've seen a Nissan car advert and a Jet2Holiday advert across the top of my screen. If I had not made a point of checking them for the purpose of this post, I'd have no idea what the ads were for because I never pay attention to them. Same goes for the ads on FB and Insta. They are just annoying. I can't say I've ever intentionally clicked on an ad whilst browsing social media.

LEELULUMPKIN · 18/10/2020 12:10

I don't own a mobile phone, I just look at MN on my PC now and again.

No interest in FB and the like, never joined any of it.

I don't feel the need to watch The Social Dilemma.

Yes and especially the people who massively overshare every detail not only of their lives but their children’s. These companies are not working in our interest and everything we give them is just a dollar in their pocket. We’re going to have generations of people addicted to it and trained to be so from a young age.

Care to elaborate OP?

What I found interesting about it was the point that an internet search will show you what you are interested in. Confused ?

Basically if you have searched for a topic, for example topical to this time would be link between Covid and 5G - you search is there a link between Covid and 5G and then start clicking on the pages that say yes, then from now on you will only really see the pages that say yes, your adverts will be showing you yes, the groups suggested to you will be showing yes - so you start to think that everyone agrees with you. You will never see the other side as the internet will only show you what you want to see

Sorry, that probably sounds confusing but hopefully you understand what I mean
