Our local paper said the council are running a campaign for binning masks.
I like to read the comments.
Someones comment was. ' I saw someone put a tissue in my wheelie bin so I poured a bottle of disinfectant in the bin!
I mean honestly are people that ott. Or am I too laid back that it wouldn't bother me.
I always wash hands and sanitise after touching my bin lid. But wouldn't occur to me to worry what's been put in there by a passer by that within a short time I'd be putting a bag of rubbish on top of?
I'd sooner they throw in my bin than on the street or a garden..( And yes I know they could take it home but maybe didn't want in their pocket for the day)

Yabu.. Its not ott
Yanbu.. It wouldn't bother me.

People are nuts about bins.

I once picked up some litter and put it in the bin outside a house (beautiful countryside, no litter bins around). The person whose bin it was ran out of his house and yelled at me to take it out of his bin. I really don't get it.

chocolatemademefat · 17/10/2020 05:50

YANBU. I picked up litter outside a neighbours house and as it was bin day I put it in his wheelie bin which had still to be emptied. He rushed out of the house in a right strop and accused me of putting dirty nappies in his bin the previous week. At that time my sons were both in high school so nappies were definitely a thing of the past.

I’d think twice about putting stuff in anyone’s bin now.

PracticingPerson · 17/10/2020 05:55

Technically you shouldn't put things into other people's domestic bins.

But I wouldn't worry about the germs aspect, no. And I would be amazed if I even noticed someone putting a piece of rubbish in my bin! My brother me don't get a lot of attention.

Ifailed · 17/10/2020 06:02

in most places, the bins are owned by the council and if they are out in a public space like a pavement I see nothing wrong in using them for litter.

PracticingPerson · 17/10/2020 06:09

A domestic bin is not provided for public rubbish disposal so this isn't correct.

It is classed as antisocial behaviour to put rubbish into neighbour's bins.

If person A wants to litter pick they should take it home to their own bin or use a public bin.

I wouldn't care in practical terms but it isn't the right thing to do.

Ifailed · 17/10/2020 06:43

@PracticingPerson, once someone has decided to block the pavement with "their" bin, I feel they've lost any right over what's put in it.

Sully84 · 17/10/2020 06:53

Where I live we have wheelie bins but everything in the bin must be in black bin liners or the council won’t empty (they pull the bags out to put in their own bigger wheelie bin to put on the lorry). So it would bother me if someone threw some rubbish on top as then the bin men would leave the whole bin and I would have to fish out whatever was thrown in there. If that wasn’t the case I wouldn’t mind.

SimplyPizza · 17/10/2020 10:06

You shouldn’t be putting anything in your neighbours bins so YABU.

Family1st2020 · 17/10/2020 22:16

I didn't say I put it in a bin. It was a comment I'd read on our local paper fb page.

A bin is for rubbish, I'd much prefer it picked up and disposed of than on the pavement. Seriously some people need to get perspective. There are much bigger issues to get upset over. YANBU

Macncheeseballs · 18/10/2020 08:29

I hate people putting their crap in my bin especially dog crap

C4tintherug · 18/10/2020 08:29

I’m sure I read something that said bins belong to the council therefore it’s not illegal to put stuff in your neighbours bin but it is good manners to ask!

SquirrelFan · 18/10/2020 08:49

I'd love it if someone picked up the rubbish on my street and put it in my bin!

Weebitawks · 18/10/2020 09:14

I really wouldn't mind this at all. I even wouldn't mind bagged dog poo, especially not on bin day. People are weird about their bins.

Mine does get cleaned fortnightly and our bin men are really good, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

JustCallMeGriffin · 18/10/2020 10:32

This wouldn't be an issue if fines for incorrect disposal of waste didn't exist.

In my council area if you're caught with non-compliant waste in your bin (recyclables or food) you're issued with a fine.

In practice I'm happy for someone to throw their rubbish in my bin rather than littering but in reality I'd be furious if I had a £60 fine or whatever it is because someone threw their plastic bottle in my bin instead of taking it home to recycle.

user18264925482 · 18/10/2020 10:40

Regardless of "feelings" of being entitled to put rubbish in any bin, that bin belongs to someone else for their domestic use. Adding your own rubbish is fly-tipping which is illegal.

Same as it's illegal to put domestic waste in public litter bins, and to chuck your waste into someone else's skip... or to dump waste outside a tip entrance...

Storyoftonight · 18/10/2020 10:45

I can't believe we are comparing fly tipping to putting a piece of litter in someone's bin. This is ridiculous Grin

Spidey66 · 18/10/2020 10:55

I really can't get excited about someone putting a little bit of rubbish in my bin. Even dog poo (as long as it was bagged). I'd rather it went in my bin than the soles of my shoes.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/10/2020 10:55

I went to pull in my bin a few weeks ago and opened it to check it had been emptied. In the bottom were two empty cans of Tennants lager. They were definitely not mine but I wasn't at all bothered they were there. I would rather they were in my bin than chucked in my hedge.

Ellewoods20 · 18/10/2020 11:08

Most people appear to have miss the point. The point is it's ott to pour disinfectant in a bin just because someone has put a face mask in there. They've done it because if covid-19 but personally, I don't see the point.

doublehalo · 18/10/2020 11:12

There's only a point if their name is Oscar and they actually live in said bin.

How would you like someone coming and putting their mask through your letterbox?

Ellewoods20 · 18/10/2020 11:17

doublehalo that's completely different. Bins are a place to put rubbish so are full of germs to begin with.

Smallsteps88 · 18/10/2020 11:21

Unless they’re planning to lick the inside of their bin it’s really OTT to disinfect it.

equuscaballus · 18/10/2020 11:59

I once noticed some litter on my neighbours driveway as I walked by. I picked it up and put it in their wheelie bin (because it was nearest)

Later I found the same litter dumped in the corner of my driveway.

Some people are so precious, its like preserving their territory trumps their common sense !
