Please can you explain how to pronounce
Castell Cysgwr?
I have tried googling and can’t find anything useful.

Kast - Ell (the Welsh LL sound)

Kus - goor

Is how I'm reading it.

Sennedd · 16/10/2020 17:32

Castell You may find this easier cass teth l (l as in lolly). Castethl

IndigoHexagon · 16/10/2020 17:33

@BrumBoo has it pretty close x as a Welsh learner that’s how I would say it - although I can’t quite make the ‘ll’ sound as perfect as someone who has spoken Welsh from birth

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/10/2020 17:37

Kass teth ll

Kuss goor

I'm only a beginner, pub landlady is fluent, 1st language Welsh and I s being very patient with me!

Stellaroses · 16/10/2020 17:38

Yes @brumboo is correct. Cast - ell (welsh 'll' sound - arrange mouth as if saying 'l' but blow air out past sides of tongue, no vocal sound)
Cuss - goor (rolled 'r' as in brrrrrrr and oo sound is a little less elongated than in english)

It means Sleeper's Castle

Stellaroses · 16/10/2020 17:39

I wouldn't make a 'th' sound for 'll' as the 'll' doesn't involve the tongue between the teeth and th is a sound of its own.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/10/2020 17:47

It's the best I can do for that almost silent, but not quite, hesitation that is so prevalent in Welsh.

I'm told I'll get my ear in eventually.

Stellaroses · 16/10/2020 17:49

A 'sh' sound is closer. Try making a 'sh' then grinning as widely as possible whilst making the sound - that's pretty close!

mrshonda · 16/10/2020 17:57

Welsh is such a beautiful language

JovialNickname · 16/10/2020 19:19

Cas - tell (Welsh ll so place your tongue on the roof of your mouth and blow lightly when doing the ll. Kus - goor (touch the end of your tongue quickly behind your top front teeth after the r.)

BBCK · 16/10/2020 19:32

To make the Ll sound, put your tongue in the same position as you would to say L in English, but press your tongue harder against the roof of your mouth then make a slight hissing sound.

I am also learning Welsh. I picked up some words from mum as a child and have been learning in recent months during lockdown as it was reassuring (and reminded me of her and my nain).

Sheknowsaboutme · 29/10/2020 09:22

“Th” and “ll” are totally different sounds. Dont use “th”.
