To not want to go into work

Zararose9x · 16/10/2020 16:30

So I work in a school in the morning and some where else in the evenings to make up money ect.

At the start of the week a few staff members tested positive for COVID, a year group and various members of staff were told to self isolate for 2 weeks.

Today a member of staff in my class tested positive for COVID and the class and myself were sent home and told to self isolate for 2 weeks. I haven’t had that much close contact with the staff member that tested positive but obviously have with the children.

The problem I have is the my other place of work has said I still need to come in until I am contacted by track and trace. I explained the situation but they were firm on coming in until I have been contacted by track and trace.

I feel like I should be self isolating and I don’t think I will be contacted by track and trace.

The school hasn’t given me much info like I gave them a call for more info and they just told me not to come in until after half term and to self isolate for 2 weeks.

What would you do?

Mammylamb · 16/10/2020 20:43

I wouldn’t go in. You’ve been told to self isolate, so you need to self isolate. Your evening employer is being idiotic

Marisishidinginmyattic · 16/10/2020 20:44

Tell them track and trace got in touch after all. Easy.

OvertiredandConfused · 16/10/2020 20:48

My DS has been sent home from 6th form to isolate. He works in a shop 8 hours a week. They want proof of track and trace to believe him. No call yet...

It’s tough. I’ve told him not to go in. Can you call in sick?

vanillandhoney · 16/10/2020 20:54

Can the school vouch for you?

Zararose9x · 16/10/2020 20:57

I’d rather not go in but have been told I will have a disciplinary if I don’t.

Have booked a Covid test tomorrow for peace of mind.

The problem is I’m due to work tomorrow evening and Sunday and can’t get in contact with the school till Monday.

If you are waiting on test results you can't go into work.

Grapefruitcauliflower · 16/10/2020 21:06

Your evening employers are being despicable. Have they said anything in writing? Can you email them something along the lines of “On [date] I informed you that I needed to self-isolate [due to the case at school] but you have told me I must still come to work. Since this is against current government advice I wanted to ensure I have not misunderstood. Could you therefore please confirm that I have understood this correctly?” I understand you probably need the job, but I wouldn’t go in if at all possible - what if you were carrying the virus and passed it on to someone vulnerable?

vanillandhoney · 16/10/2020 21:12

@Zararose9x

I’d rather not go in but have been told I will have a disciplinary if I don’t.

Have booked a Covid test tomorrow for peace of mind.

Surely they could face a fine if they try and make you work?

I would see if you can get in touch with Citizens Advice.

SoloMummy · 16/10/2020 21:13

Tell them you've been contacted by track and trace if that's what they want to hear. Or email a link to the gov advice and ask if they wish to pay the fine!

wellhellohi · 16/10/2020 21:17

Even if you get a negative test you still need to isolate for 14 days.
lanthanum · 16/10/2020 21:20

I don't think the test and trace system will contact individuals at the school, because they get the school to identify who should self-isolate rather than getting the person with the positive test to work out who they might have been near. You need to explain that to the other employer.

Perhaps you can ask one of the people who has tested positive to ring test and trace and say that you are one of their contacts, so that they can send you an individual message.

@zararose9x There's no point in you getting a test, if you are not symptomatic. All it will tell you is that you haven't got it YET, but you could be incubating it. Wait until you are symptomatic to do a test.

You might be waiting a long time, our friends tested positive, gave track & trace our details and we've never heard from them, this was 5 weeks ago. They're absolutely bloody useless!
Your employers are totally in the wrong, they may even be acting illegally, I'm not sure if the requirement to isolate is in legislation now rather than just guidance but stick to your guns.

Lolaloveslemonade · 16/10/2020 21:28

Absolutely do not go to work at your other place. Tell them that the school has told you to isolate for 2 weeks and that is what you are doing.
If you go to work in your other job, your school would discipline you. Tell your second employer that if you go to work for them, they and you will be breaking the law.

Lolaloveslemonade · 16/10/2020 21:29

Also, do not go for a test. You don’t need to.

LadyFannyButton · 16/10/2020 21:45

Have booked a Covid test tomorrow for peace of mind

How will doing a test, when you don’t have any symptoms, give you peace of mind?
You could start with symptoms on day 14.

Teacherontherun · 16/10/2020 21:49

PHE are not necessarily doing track and trace for schools. They are leaving it up to heads to do the job. Uts disgraceful. My head was on hold for 2hours to phe then basically told to just work out who to isolate.

Rotundandhappy · 16/10/2020 22:03

Jut say you’re symptomatic and can’t come in.

Zararose9x · 16/10/2020 22:05

I know I shouldn’t really get a test done, but the only reason I’m having to self isolate is because a member of staff got a test done with no symptoms and it came back positive.

I haven’t been given anything in writing and can’t get anything in writing till Monday. I have no idea who to contact from the school if I wanted to speak to them tomorrow.

I do understand where my employer is coming from as they Government Websites say to only self isolate if you have a positive test or anyone in your household, have been contacted by track and trace, or If you have symptoms.

There is literally no official guidance on what you should if your told to self isolate by a school/education setting that I could pass on to them !

Youve suddenly got a temperature??? ... how on earth can you get a disciplinary for not going in Shock im gobsmacked... workplaces are not allowed to action covid related sickness at all!! So personally I'd say you have got a cough or temperature x

Zararose9x · 16/10/2020 22:08

@Rotundandhappy

Jut say you’re symptomatic and can’t come in.
Wish I said this today when I spoke to them. Will ring them tomorrow morning and say I’ve got a test booked and it literally does say to self isolate until you get result back. This will give me a bit of time so I can speak to the school on Monday and see if I can get anything official.

Duemarch2021 · 16/10/2020 22:09

Who on earth do you work for...?? They are idiots... I'd like to know out of curiousity

cobpickles · 16/10/2020 22:09
