To think Wales have done the right thing by ‘closing the border’

I am welsh but live in England. All my family live in wales and at the moment, because of a local lockdown in South Wales, my sister is unable to visit my elderly mother in another county in wales.

And yet until today, people from other places in the UK were allowed to drive into wales (potentially from areas with a high infection rate) and go wherever they want on their holidays.

I have read loads of criticism of this policy but aibu to think why the hell should people from outside wales be allowed to drive all over the country (potentially spreading the virus) when my family aren’t allowed to see each other in Wales?

People have made loads of sacrifices in wales so why should that sacrifice be undermined by people coming from other areas?

I can’t currently visit my mum as I am not allowed now but I could have driven 200 miles from London whereas my sister couldn’t drive 40 miles up the road. Fucking bonkers.

Aibu?

I've just left wales as our holiday was cut short by the new rules. The chap running our holiday accommodation said the tourism industry in mid wales is very disappointed with the changes. Despite opening for the summer hols season the numbers didn't go up there and they don't think this step is needed. They're worried about survival of some of the shops and tourism.

I know people from Liverpool travelling to wales for half term. It won’t be enforceable.

QueenofLean · 16/10/2020 13:04

To be honest after all the ‘if Covid doesn’t get you, our welsh dragon will’ shit from the beginning of lockdown id be happy not to go to Wales again. And I’m Welsh (living in England). Sadly my aunt is currently on end of life care in Wales after her cancer treatment was cancelled during lockdown so if I’m ‘allowed’ I will be crossing the border for her funeral soon.

Sirzy · 16/10/2020 13:05

Places can, and should, cancel and refund bookings for anyone who is booked from a tier 2 or 3 venue.

People shouldn’t be allowed to carry on regardless of the rules. (And I say that as someone who is now moving into tier 3 who cancelled a much needed holiday to wales a few weeks back)

justasking111 · 16/10/2020 13:31

@Sirzy my DIL not only had to cancel everyone in the Conwy borough but had to kick out people already staying for a holiday because it happened so fast last time. So you can be a chancer and get in but if we have a national lockdown you will be out on your ear.

Cadent · 16/10/2020 13:34

FML, some of you really are hard of reading aren't you?

People are just going by OP saying ‘closing the border’.

Irisheyesrsmiling · 16/10/2020 13:43

I agree.

Elphame · 16/10/2020 13:59

I’ve just driven into one Welsh lockdown areas For my first visit for 3 weeks.

I could cry with what I’m seeing. Beautiful guest houses closed and up for sale. Pubs closed and empty cafe car parks despite them having big signs saying they are open. Many won’t survive this. The autumn trade has been snatched from us and many will have no income now til Easter and even then we may not be allowed to open.

My business will survive but only because only a small amount is exposed to Drakeford’s political power plays. I won’t be investing any more in the Welsh economy though. We’ve abandoned plans to expand here now and I never thought I’d be saying that.

2beautifulbabs · 16/10/2020 15:48

Exactly and I'm afraid our jumped up minister is bent on destroying the Welsh economy further more now with the latest announcement of a lockdown for two- three weeks I call bullshit will be on going another March type one but worse because he has to prove the big I am 🤬

2beautifulbabs · 16/10/2020 15:51

I am ashamed to say he's leading wales back into the dark ages shocking.
I was so proud to be Welsh and what a beautiful country we have and the nature that surrounds us but I am so angry that Drakeford will destroy The Welsh economy beyond repair we already have massive areas that suffer with poverty and this is going to make things 100 times worse will all the MPs gladly give up they're wages to support the people will they pay for missed mortgage payments rental payments food on the table for families up and down the country or will they yet again expect the people to grin and bear it and suffer further more

doctorhamster · 16/10/2020 15:59

I do agree but I can see why others don't. My whole family is locked down in South Wales and I've only seen them on a this year. It's hard.

doctorhamster · 16/10/2020 15:59

*once not on a Confused

AJGranny · 16/10/2020 18:00

@Shoxfordian
Wales is also in the UK

footprintsintheslow · 16/10/2020 18:13

@Ritasueandbobtoo9

The people don’t change significantly 3 miles left or right of Offa’s Dyke. Should be one rule or no rule. Hate this and how some people in some areas of Wales are using it to further their nationalistic aims aka: racists.
It's xenophobia not racism.

And also I disagree that one rule for all is the way forward. Why would a county with very very low numbers want to live under the same restrictions as Manchester etc?

footprintsintheslow · 16/10/2020 18:18

@AlternativePerspective

Wel for a start there are no borders into Wales.

Secondly, the supposed “closure” is only relevant to the most high risk areas so e.g. those in tier3 at the moment, so essentially they’re saying all people from Liverpool are banned.

Lastly, they have already said that they haven’t yet worked out how they’re going to be able to enforce it, meaning that it’s not enforceable.

Essentially this is just a headline grabber and nothing more.

And if Wales are going to ban people from England from coming in then presumably the welsh taxpayer alone is going to be held responsible for the damage that is going to do to their economy.

If England started to ban the Welsh from coming in the cries of racism would be heard far and wide....

It's Xenophobia not racism
Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/10/2020 18:26

According to a United Nations convention on racial discrimination, there is no distinction between the terms "racial" and "ethnic" discrimination.

There should be consistency across the UK. The differences between what is now known as the four nations have been laid bare by all this. You realise we have a vote for your prime minister and one for our first minister?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/10/2020 18:29

We (see how the nationalism just comes naturally now) are doing much better on track & trace though - but that is because we are run by a Labour government but you English are run by capitalists with their piggy trotters knee deep in Sercoshit!

Ifailed · 16/10/2020 21:46

but you English are run by capitalists with their piggy trotters knee deep in Sercoshit!
Be careful, it's those nasty capitalists that bank-roll your country.

Shoxfordian · 16/10/2020 21:48

I know wales is in the uk
I was making a joke

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/10/2020 21:54

Ifailed You are missing the irony. This is my country or is it? Who knows any more?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/10/2020 21:58

And as for Serco - they really aren’t doing an effective job so I do think the public gaze should be turned to the people that think it is more effective to commission a bunch of randoms or give the job to local health board who employ people who are skilled and know how to talk with people and gain their trust find out who is infected and who needs to be traced.

IamaBluebird · 16/10/2020 21:59

QueenofLean , I hope you get the chance to visit your Aunt, it's so sad that you aren't able to. Daffodil

QueenofLean · 16/10/2020 22:05

Thank you @IamaBluebird
