He has guitar and keyboards lessons, but lost interest. What do I do?

Absolutely not too late. I started my main instrument at 12 (although previously had piano lessons from age 7-9 so could already read music). I took my first exam (grade 3) 18 months later and had achieved grade 7 by age 15. Older students tend to progress faster and his previous musical knowledge will help. He may be very behind his peers for a year or two, but will most likely catch them up.

Another music teacher here, albeit not a violinist. Your friends are talking bollocks.

As others have said, he will be behind his peer group if they have started much earlier in life, and will take some time to catch up, and will need to be disciplined if he wants to progress. But if he is motivated and if you have a good teacher (one that doesn't have age-related preconceptions) then why shouldn't he progress?

Nicholas McCarthy (professional pianist, and conservatoire graduate) didn't start playing piano until he was 14. And he only has one hand. He is, admittedly, exceptionally talented, but it just shows that starting as a teeny one isn't essential, even if you want to pursue a musical career (which, of course, many people don't).

Good luck to your son - hope it brings him joy.
