AIBU for expecting to be called my job title

I work as a XXX assistant to my manager. Three managers and three people at the same level as me. Above us is the manager and above that ‘head of X’.

The lady who is the overall head of our department always refers to people at my level as admin. I’m an assistant and I don’t know why she refers to us as assistants.

AIBU to be bothered by this?

Refers to us as ADMIN

Perhaps as an assistant you’re doing administrative type work?

CatsAndEyeliner · 15/10/2020 14:28

Without knowing more about them, if I met someone who called themselves an assistant I would assume that means administrative work.

Is the issue actually that you feel ‘admin’ derogatory/‘below your station’?

Grilledaubergines · 15/10/2020 14:31

If it’s an admin role she’s not unreasonable. My role is “assistant xyz” but collectively, Me and my same level colleagues are referred to as “support”.

unmarkedbythat · 15/10/2020 14:32

TBH, if the way she describes your role is inaccurate, the only person who looks bad is her.

Plussizejumpsuit · 15/10/2020 14:32

Do you feel admin is a lowly job role? Or that she is trying to imply this?

Do you do much admin? I think it's quite broad in what this is. I do some project management and I'm currently working on our quarterly cash flow this is very adminy. But really difficult at times! So I definitely don't assume admin is a crappy job.

Mumsnorthernmonkey · 15/10/2020 14:39

@CatsAndEyeliner yes I do find it below my station. It’s generally what I do (isn’t most jobs admin) but considering that I have a title, shouldn’t the dear leader use the correct title?

OP posts:
TrickorTreacle · 15/10/2020 14:42

I have a complex job title, but at the end of the day, I'm just an admin. I'm fine with being called that.

Do you call the people who collect your waste - "waste disposal technicians"? No, I thought not. They're called the bin men / dust men.

Florencex · 15/10/2020 14:42

You find it below your station, but agree it is what you do? Confused. No most jobs are not admin, admin jobs are admin.

Tigger03 · 15/10/2020 14:43

It’s a bit annoying but I couldn’t get worked up about it. Where I work we take on a lot of new graduates into an analyst / associate role. They often get referred to as the ‘juniors’ by the more senior members of the team.

NewIdeasToday · 15/10/2020 14:43

It really depends on your job title which you haven’t given.

If you’re something like a Surgical Assistant then it’s insulting to be called Admin. If you’re something like an Executive Assistant then it really isn’t b

Mumsnorthernmonkey · 15/10/2020 14:43

@TrickorTreacle as a member of the public what I call them is irrelevant. When the head of my department is referring to my job in emails she can use the correct title?

OP posts:
quarentini · 15/10/2020 14:44

You do admin and you are called admin?!
Am I missing something?

Mumsnorthernmonkey · 15/10/2020 14:45

@NewIdeasToday executive and personal assistant tend to be two different levels of responsibility. Obviously whatever the company decided the role is called, shouldn’t it be referred to as that role by senior management.

OP posts:
Mumsnorthernmonkey · 15/10/2020 14:46

@quarentini hi no I’m an assistant. My boss does the same work as me, but also some more. Shall I also call him admin as well?

OP posts:
quarentini · 15/10/2020 14:48

Senior admin maybe ?

Mumsnorthernmonkey · 15/10/2020 14:49

@quarentini how about call refer to me as my job title lol.

OP posts:
AlexaShutUp · 15/10/2020 14:49

Sorry, OP, it sounds to me like you're being a bit precious. You have said that you do admin. Most "assistant" type jobs are admin. Why does it matter anyway?

Are you a bit insecure about your status or something?

MuckyPlucky · 15/10/2020 14:55

@quarentini how about call refer to me as my job title lol.

I’d hazard a guess your role doesn’t involve much written admin (ie: having to proof-read/spell/use accurate grammar?)

Marylou2 · 15/10/2020 14:56

Do you have a professional qualification that is needed to undertake your role? Does your role involve any specific technical duties/skills? If so I can see why you are annoyed. I'd choose your battles carefully if the person referring to you as admin is a senior manager.

RhymesWithOrange · 15/10/2020 14:58

I think I get you OP, e.g. your boss is a Professor, you are an Assistant Professor. Or your boss is Head of Procurement and you are Assistant Head of Procurement. Neither are "admin" jobs.

Why shouldn't you be afforded the status your job title affords?

Wildbeandgone · 15/10/2020 14:59

Ok to put it into perspective; the Vice-Chancellor of the University I work at once told someone, who was trying to diminish the role of an administrator, that technically he (VC) was also an administrator

Casmama · 15/10/2020 14:59

I think if the title admin refers to the work you do rather than the job title then you are getting your knickers in a twist over nothing.

Flaunch · 15/10/2020 15:01

Raise it with the head of your department and see where it gets you 🤷🏽‍♀️

Newkitchen123 · 15/10/2020 15:01

I couldn't get worked up about this.
What's wrong with using your name?
