AIBU to ask for advice on keyhole/gallbladder surgery?

Does anyone have any knowledge about this? DD was due to have her gallbladder removed today. She texted me at 9ish to say she was being taken down - when the anaesthetist saw her earlier this morning she advised if it could be keyhole surgery the operation would take about an hour and she could be home today hopefully.

I just rang to see if she was back on the ward and they said she wouldn't be back until after 2 (and will be moved to a general ward not the day case ward). I actually know I am being stupid asking here instead of just waiting patiently Blush but I I just wondered if anyone had any experience or knowledge of this? I wonder if it hasn't been able to be a keyhole op.

(She is an adult but I'm not helicoptering in a ridiculous manner, there is a bit more to it but not relevant to the surgery/medical bit)

I need to distract myself and this one time, the cat has unhelpfully fucked off somewhere when normally she would be requiring my attention every single second day of the day Hmm

My SIL had a gall bladder removal that was supposed to be keyhole but ended up being a laparotomy ( full operation) but it wasn’t entirely unexpected because she’d had a lot of infections and there was scarring.

You are very reasonable to be worried and you could certainly call to ask for an update before 2 if you are concerned. Someone must know what’s happening.

Hope all is well.

Oh thank you Matilda. I feel bad disturbing the staff when I know they will be busy! I'll try and find the cat to keep me occupied until after lunch at least...

Honestly, another DC had surgery last which was much less "routine" and much more risky and I don't remember being this worried! I think it was different as I was allowed to wait in the hospital and to be in the recovery room then whereas now I am at home and I feel a long way away from her...

I had mine removed via Keyhole but it's certainly not unusual for them to convert during surgery if they can't get a clear view.
I went in as a day case and was the only one who was kept in overnight....I threw up everywhere after I woke up!
I'm sure you don't need to worry xx

They seemed quite sure it would be keyhole but I suppose things can change. Now I have another worry that she won't understand them telling her what's happened when she wakes up - and I won't be there Sad (I don't want to be any more outing than I already am but she has issues with communication)

I wish I was there. Fuck sake. I need to get a grip!

No idea, a family member actually had there’s removed yesterday. Went in at 7.30, op at 11 and home at 7 that evening. The way they work is of keyhole isn’t going to work (it can be tricky to get to) they revert to opening up fully. The main thing is she is ok.

KeyholeSurgery · 15/10/2020 11:54

I think I'm worried as I only remember usually spending about 20 minutes in the recovery room myself before being returned to the wards, but it could be longer for different people and operations?

(I've not had my gallbladder out myself though. Maybe I should have done this myself first - like the MNer who squirted shampoo in her eyes before using it on her baby? Imagine the thread - AIBU to have my gallbladder removed so I know what to expect when my DD has hers taken out?)

How is your family member bashful? I hope they are feeling better.

Well DD is out! I don't know if it was keyhole or not but at least I know that she's out and that she's OK Smile
