My foot just stopped working...?

I'm 23 weeks pregnant and I just had a very weird thing happen to me that I'm not sure if I need to be freaked out about and phone my midwife.

I was just walking into my living room and my foot just...stopped working?

It literally dragged on the floor. It happened twice and I nearly fell over and DH was wondering what the hell was going on. I've really sprained it.

It didn't feel numb beforehand but it definitely wasn't an accidental trip, it literally just stopped working and dragged itself if that makes any sense and caused me to trip and then the same thing happened again.

No tingling before or after. Wasn't sat on it or anything so it wasn't dead like when you sleep on your arm.

Can you feel it now? Are you able to move it?

Beaverdam100 · 14/10/2020 21:44

Has it come back? Phone the GP tomorrow.

Badtasteflump · 14/10/2020 21:47

I am no medical expert but I know that in pregnancy the growing uterus can press on nerves going down the legs, leading to numbness and tingling in the legs and feet..... so maybe it's that? But I would check with your midwife/GP in the morning - assuming you're ok now?

Suzi888 · 14/10/2020 21:50

Another vote for the docs tomorrow.

Merryoldgoat · 14/10/2020 21:53

Call your Maternity triage now. Could be nothing
But could also be a sign if something serious.

I think it's this as I had it happen but didn't think anything of it. Just call triage for a chat

Call your MAU, could be nothing but don't risk it

SickToDeathOfThis · 14/10/2020 21:56

I’d consider A&E to rule out cauda equina, particularly if the issue starts moving upward. At the very least please speak to a GP in the morning?

FuckedUpFoot · 14/10/2020 21:57

Hi

Thank you.

Yes I can feel it now, it really bloody hurts because I've sprained it when going over on it and getting a nice bruise Sad

I wouldn’t leave this issue with a midwife - it’s neurological of some sort so please check with a GP at least.

LindaEllen · 14/10/2020 22:07

Definitely get it checked but my friend sometimes had a tingly leg based on the way the baby was lying (I'm the least medical person ever, sorry, this is just what she told me!) so it might be something like that, but all the same important to mention it and get it checked :).

Namenic · 14/10/2020 22:09

If you have ongoing sudden symptoms (eg weakness or loss of sensation that does not go back to normal within a few mins) or if you cannot feel around your bottom area or have difficulty passing urine or opening bowels then please go to a&e tonight because there may be things that would be better to be checked out quickly (even though some problems are rare, best to have an assessment as some can be serious).

Graphista · 14/10/2020 22:13

That needs checked out op. It could be due to pgp causing pressure on the sciatic nerve causing the foot to "go to sleep" but there are a couple of RARE but more serious other potential issues in pregnancy this could be a symptom of so wise to get those ruled out.

But the former is the most likely - how were you sitting before you moved?

DEFINITELY have it recorded in your pregnancy notes.

Were there any other symptoms? Any issues with speech, smell or taste or vision?

FuckedUpFoot · 14/10/2020 22:27

You know I was actually having problems with sciatica a couple of weeks ago so possibly related.

No other symptoms. I was just talking to DH. We were both like what the hell just happened and then when I tried to walk again, it happened again.

Nothing since the second time, I've got it up now on the foot stool as it's bruised and swelling is starting.

I will definitely call the GP in the morning as suggested and see what they think. I know it's definitely better to be safe than sorry.

Will keep an eye out for other things tonight too just in case.

I had something similar in my first pregnancy when my leg would just give up on me and I would fall or have to grab something. It was alarming and made worse by me being very busy getting ready for the baby, for moving house and for Christmas. It felt really unsafe .it went away as soon as DD was born .

im5050 · 14/10/2020 22:44

I suffer from really severe & on going sciatica for several years and my left leg and foot will do the same regularly
It’s like it’s not there 😂and I’m flat footed and I lose my balance I’ve ended up on the floor a few times with a WTF happened look from people .

It’s really hard to explain the feeling
Mine is linked to the sciatica my GP and it’s unlikely to go

Onairjunkie · 14/10/2020 23:16

Guys, don’t worry, Dr @SickToDeathOfThis has diagnosed a neurological condition and cauda equina 🙄 honestly, some people get off on scaring posters.

It’s probably just the uterus compressing blood vessels but phone the gp/midwife first thing thr o be safe.

Piwlyfbicsly · 14/10/2020 23:40

One day I couldn’t lift my toes up as people normally do while walking. Hard to explain, but I could only drag it. Basically I couldn’t lift the front part of my foot, it felt weak.
I’ve been really scared reading about a nerve damage and motor neurone disease.
I still don’t know what happened, it took 4 weeks to go away. My only idea is I have lost tons of weight in a short period of time and my legs went really skinny. I’ve got this habit of crossing my legs while sitting in front of computer for a long time and I could’ve pressed the nerve. I found this explanation somewhere and settled with it. I didn’t have any more episodes.

Beaverdam100 · 15/10/2020 15:07

Glad it's better. Rest up :)

FruitLoopyLoo · 15/10/2020 17:22

Hello all, sorry for the name change but it's OP!

I have been to the hospital today as it happened again this morning.

I have drop foot. They believe the baby is pressing on the sciatic nerve meaning I am unable to lift my foot.

I'm in a big bloody boot now to keep my foot from dragging and keep it upright.

What a nightmare!
