Child’s OT assessment

Aibu to think an OT assessment via video call isn’t going to work?
Has anyone had an OT assessment via video call? My DS 4 is due to have one this week and I honestly have no idea how it’s going to work?! Any advice or knowledge appreciated

It’s not ideal but depending on what it’s for the OT could probably get a fair bit of info from you and hopefully observe your DS a bit. Have they asked for you to have anything ready for the assessment?

My son had an NHS OT assessment, it was so superficial it could have been done via video.

What is your DS having the assessment for?

Our virtual OT sessions have actually been very successful. I think DS using his own things in his own environment helped massively. We are also getting much more regular appointments.

Both my sons have had OT assessments via video call. The OT told me beforehand what to have set up ready for the appointment - every day things like scissors, pen and paper, knife and fork and something to cut (we used a slice of bread), a shirt with buttons, a shoe with laces, a stackable toy or stackable objects (we used Jenga). The exact things you need will depend on why they've been referred and what the OT needs to see. The OT talked DS' through each activity one at a time and I handed over the relevant bits of equipment as needed. I used my phone because it was easier to move the camera around and zoom in and out as needed. The OT told me as we went if she needed a change of angle or for him to repeat any of the activities.

DS has spd, development, speech delays and learning difficulties.
See the OT haven’t told me to prepare anything or how it’s going to work? I get that he’ll be more comfortable in his own surroundings. Hopefully he won’t go camera shy 🙈

I would have the same about speech therapy only a few months ago. Now having delivered 100 plus sessions I realise it can actually work very well. It doesn't for some kids though so fortunately we can revert to face to face in PPE as needed - which has its own challenges

Duggeehugs82 · 14/10/2020 20:55

I had a dace to face obe but did have option of zoom call, it was majority answering questions, my daughter wouldnt interact with lady anyways so she just observed her and took notes on what i said. It wouldn't have matter either way face to face or online
