Would ypu send your kids?
If you were a leader how comfortable would you feel about holding sessions?
We 're being told to keep going just break the section into smaller groups but i m worried

Ours have changed to weekend afternoon outside. Kids are loving it

Waveysnail · 14/10/2020 12:55

Also change location so different parks or woods etc

Halfwreckedbykids · 14/10/2020 17:43

Youdidask...yes i m a leader, in cubs but in Ireland.
This is the only forum i m on so was curious to see how the uk were going.
To be very honest we havent been given explicit guidelines by scouting ireland so that makes me nervous. We only got the mail yesterday about crossing borders etc.
The other leaders also feel cast adrift. The big problem is asymptomatic transfer here at the minute, we ve had 25 cases of thst yesterday alone.
I m happy outside but not inside.
In Ireland a significant amount of cases are in tge 15 to 25 age group hence the concern.
Parents cant join in because of child protection, and not having done the course.

That's 25 v local cases btw.
Tganks so much everyone. I m aware that i may be irrational and willing a lockdown...plus i suppose i ve been a leader for many years and was facing burn out in march so i m not as enthusiastic as i once was

My DC3 is currently at their Beaver session which my DH runs. They are all outside and split into 2 groups. They have had enough parent volunteers as everyone is so keen to keep it going and give the kids something to do. My DC2 goes to cubs and they are also outside. Cubs were great online in lockdown but was hard to do Beavers as they are younger. We are currently in a low risk area and everyone involved seems to be thinking lets keep going till we are inevitably told to stop. My DH would hate any of his helpers to feel they had to do it so if you dont feel safe I would say no way do it, but of all the organisations my kids are involved with I think Cubs/Beavers/Scouts have been very cautious about returning and have pretty thorough processes in place.

Okay so only do what you are comfortable with.
The SA is saying meeting should really be outdoor .
15 kids and in the uk they must be kept 2m apart.

Harder than it looks.
I do beavers and explorers but have done all sections.

Explorers they bring a camp chair and I space them 2m apart and we do stuff like tin can cooking, pumpkin carving mini pioneering.

Beavers we use hoops and move them around a bit.

We have 17 beavers and 16 explorers so if they all want to come we have to have a 25m space between the groups.

Nothing stopping you using the uk SA web pages for advice.

I’m an explorer leader and we haven’t restarted yet, we surveyed parents and got a really poor response. If we do restart any time soon it’s likely to be once a month and 100% outside. Our kids come from a huge geographic area and several schools so it’s a big risk. I really hope we have a group to go back to at the end of this. Sad

Guides here. DD's unit have been meeting online and with monthly challenges, since March. We've been meeting in person since the end of September. Outside, in smaller groups and with extra safety measures and after many pages of risk assessments..
Girls have really enjoyed meeting up again as have the leaders.

DominaShantotto · 14/10/2020 19:43

Perfectly happy to send my kids - will be thinking twice about continuing if it goes back into zoom cos that was just stressful as hell for us. Hopefully back indoors after half term but half length meetings to keep numbers lower.

Ours naturally divides almost into halves between two schools anyway so they’ve just split them like that.

namesnamesnamesnames · 14/10/2020 19:58

Yes the section leaders have undertaken huge risk assessments, had them signed off and can run. Lower numbers with split groups where needed, pretty much all outside. It's working really well.

Yetiyoga · 14/10/2020 20:02

Girlguiding leader here. We have started back but if I'm being honest I don't feel totally happy about it. I've been told there is no pressure at all to come back but there aren't enough leaders so I'd be letting the group down and I guess this is going on for a while.
I think it is good for the kids and we are sticking to smaller than normal groups but im worried about the impact on my finances should one of them test positive.

BobBobBobbing · 14/10/2020 20:06

Ours is a huge group and we are tier 2 so it hasn't started up again yet. I'm fine with that- I've said that if they start back and I'm not happy with the situation I won't be sending them back, but I'm happy to keep paying their subs to keep the group going. (I offered to do that all through lockdown but they said it wasn't needed)
