Christmas decorations

SallyB392 · 13/10/2020 20:13

Am I unreasonable to feel that shops should be selling decorations representing at least a few nativity scenes?
We went to the garden centre today, they have beautiful Christmas decorations but just one diorama depicting the nativity. I always enjoyed looking at decorations and watching the fireworks that accompany Eid, Divali, Yum Kippur, Chinese New Year, and all world faiths, they represent our multicultural society. But I want to see the decorations representing the Christian faith too. Is that so unreasonable?

They sell what people buy, so they can’t be popular. You didn’t even say you wanted to buy some, just wanted to look at them

Wrenna · 13/10/2020 20:41

Yabu. Christmas stuff should not be out until after Halloween!

Inertia · 13/10/2020 20:56

It's only October!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/10/2020 20:57
  1. It's only October
  2. Christmas Tree and Santa have fuck all to do with the Nativity.
SallyB392 · 14/10/2020 08:59

I should have been clearer, I did want to buy and did buy the one item, the diorama.
Yes, I agree it is very early for us to want to buy anything to do with xmas, but I have disabilities which make it difficult for me to shop as it gets busier, so rather than make a fuss we always get our Christmas shopping early.

As a PP said, they sell what people buy.

I don't know many people that buy traditional nativity stuff as decorations.

RhubarbBikini · 14/10/2020 09:35

Willow Tree do a beautiful nativity collection. It's quite pricey, but I got quite a few pieces a few years ago when H Samuel combined 3 for 2 with black Friday sales.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/10/2020 09:35

We have a few of differing sizes, but they are the kind of thing that last for many years and don't need replacing frequently which will affect sales.

RozHuntleysStump · 14/10/2020 09:37

I'm knitting my own nativity this year. I'm not religious either but I like the tradition of it.

halcyondays · 14/10/2020 09:40

Lakeland usually does some nice nativity sets.

GunsAndShips · 14/10/2020 09:42

Is there a veiled implication that Christianity is somehow being eroded or ignored in this country?

Christmas for many of us isn't a Christian festival anyway and I'm as white English as they come. My traditions predate your new ones by quite some margin Grin

Milkshake7489 · 14/10/2020 09:52

As PP have said, it's a case of supply and demand... and I'm personally loving the weird array of Christmas decorations on offer this year!

That being said, I've seen plenty of nativity scenes on offer (at Homesense and garden centres mainly). You could also try searching online if you're after something specific.

Mc2b · 14/10/2020 09:52

It's not a conspiracy against Christians, there's plenty of places online to buy them, but physical shops are going to sell what's the most popular.

EmeraldShamrock · 14/10/2020 09:58

I love a nice Christmas nativity set. It may not have anything directly related to Christmas for many, it is for me.
Every year heading to Arnott's to see the nativity. I've memories as a DC decorating our manger with tinsel and waiting until Christmas to add baby jesus it was made from plaster the heads were regularly glued back on. Grin

BoulangerieBabs · 14/10/2020 09:59

That's not how business works, if you want to see a selection then look on the internet.

EmeraldShamrock · 14/10/2020 10:03

I agree with others it isn't something you buy yearly, not everyone likes them. Online is the best option.

MJMG2015 · 14/10/2020 10:12

Especially this year, you're being very unreasonable.

It's only October

Lots of places will have dropped how much they're going to have in store, IF they could

I understand that if you're disabled it's easier to shop when it's not busy, but there's a limit to how early you can expect shops to stock seasonal items.

EmpressSuiko · 14/10/2020 10:27

Well our country is becoming more and more secular, I only know one person who focuses on the religious part of Christmas.
Also more people know the true origins of Christmas now and how Christianity took elements from the Pagan, Roman, etc festivities and made their own holiday to convert them all.
You’ll surely find a nice set online but maybe wait until Halloween is over, they’ll bring more decorations out next month.

Dugsbollox · 14/10/2020 10:28

I know in our family if we have nativity things its something people keep and reuse yearly. So haven't really been surprised at the shops not stocking tonnes of different objects depicting it. And, in my family, they generally wouldn't have more than one or maybe two nativity related items to decorate their home.

I don't think I've ever seen Eid or Diwali decorations in the shops!

Sniv · 14/10/2020 10:34

Considering you actually did find a nativity set for sale in the one place you looked, this post does seem a bit over dramatic.

There's more than one nativity scene?

I mean, shepherds, some animals and wise men around a manger, that's about it I would have thought.

Dahlietta · 14/10/2020 10:38

Surely fireworks represent Diwali or Eid in pretty much the same way as a sparkly bauble represents Christmas?

Stompythedinosaur · 14/10/2020 10:40

I think there are plenty if nativity scenes available. I dont think Christianity is treated in any way worse than other faiths.

aToadOnTheWhole · 14/10/2020 10:41

Yanbu to want more nativities, but you have to go looking for them, mainly on the internet. There's some lovely ones about.

But shops sell what is going to make the most money and shift quickest. And we live in a largely secular society now. Besides, there's always loads of angels and star decorations, those are religious if you're going for the Nativity story Grin

AnnaJKing · 14/10/2020 10:42

If people don’t buy them, shops won’t stock them. Plus it’s only October.

And we don’t have fireworks for Yom Kippur.
