Staying in school uniform after school?

Thought I would start a thread to see what others do as my partner and his family always comment on the fact that my DS stays in his uniform after school and I don’t see the issue so wondered if it isn’t normal.

He has fresh uniform every day but keeps it on until he gets ready for bed. If he wants to get changed then he will just get ready for bed early but I’ve never got him to get changed into other clothes when we got home and partner thinks I should.

I never got changed after school apart from as a teen when I was going out with friends after school. But partner and family are really judgey about it like it isn’t normal and it’s not hygienic (not covid they have always felt that way).

So do your children get changed after school and Is there something I’m missing about why I should be making him change?

Three of mine change but sometimes one doesn’t. Does he go out to play?

cricketmum84 · 13/10/2020 19:13

I think with the current situation they should always get changed after school! Mine changes and I spray her uniform with an anti bac febreeze.

I'm a 90s kid and I don't remember changing after school unless it was into pyjamas though.

JesusInACabbageVan · 13/10/2020 19:14

We certainly have never bothered with changing and haven't started now! We keep clothes on all day, why shouldn't they?

Biancadelrioisback · 13/10/2020 19:15

DS is only in school nursery but i do change him when he gets home. It's hard enough to keep a white polo white workout adding after school play to it!
I always got changed too, just into joggers and t-shirt or something but was way more comfortable than my school kilt and blazer

Facelikearustytractor · 13/10/2020 19:16

Sometimes do, sometimes don't, depends what our plans are.

Our boys get changed and hang up blazers/trousers/ties. They usually put on clothes but sometimes pajamas. Uniform isn’t comfy to relax in!

Jupin · 13/10/2020 19:16

@Greeneyes78 no he’s just with me after school no children go out to play here 😫 I wish he could

Mine shower after school and get lounge wear/pyjamas on. To be fair, it's what we all do! If we're home, we're generally in lounge wear/pj's.

I'm only saying lounge wear because it's a bit of a family joke.

ComicePear · 13/10/2020 19:17

Mine do change, but I wouldn't judge anyone who doesn't. Except that it would annoy me to have to wash their uniform every day! Mine wear the same uniform for two or three days.

I think that it's best practise , at the moment, to change their clothes once they come home from school.

To be honest, when I come home from work, I want to peel my clothes off and feel more comfortable. I don't want to be reminded of work while I'm lounging on the sofa. I am more comfortable in my elasticated joggers, loose top, no bra and fluffy socks or slippers.

BillywigSting · 13/10/2020 19:18

Mine didn't pre covid unless we were eg going out for tea or got soaked walking home.

We all get changed as soon as we come in from school /work now though and clothes go straight in the wash, we get straight in the shower. Probably a bit overkill but I work in a care home and really don't want to bring covid in there.

Under normal circumstances I'd say yadnbu but I'm on the fence in current times.

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 13/10/2020 19:18

Generally no they stay in uniform.

GottaPlanStan · 13/10/2020 19:18

My teenager gets changed as soon as she gets home.

My 10yr-old only changes if she's planning to play outside after school.

Beamur · 13/10/2020 19:19

DD would do the same. At the moment she's changing as she gets home from school.
This means she's wearing 2 sets of clothes a day. She won't wear the same item of clothing twice.

dementedpixie · 13/10/2020 19:19

No mine don't get changed after school and never have unless they got wet

itbemay1 · 13/10/2020 19:19

Pre covid mine always stayed in uniform until bath then pjs. Now DS takes uniform off as soon as home and showers, quick dettol fabric spray of blazer and he's in his sweats.

BackBeatTheWordisOnTheStreet · 13/10/2020 19:20

If they're uncomfortable and want to change then fine but neither of mine want to bother so they stay in uniform.

Tfoot75 · 13/10/2020 19:20

ShockShock what about the copious amounts of covid all over the uniform that's landed on them but they have failed to breathe in?? GrinGrin

No I don't ask them to change, but they often do anyway so I have twice the washing to do as they don't wear anything twice or get dinner all over the second outfit! Ideally they stay in their uniforms til bed time.

PrincessButtockUp · 13/10/2020 19:21

On "straight home days" my daughter changes out of uniform but on "childminder till 6pm" days it's less likely. She rarely changes out of junior school uniform because it was so much more comfy than formal collar shirts and tailored trousers.

SendHelp30 · 13/10/2020 19:21

DD changes but only now she’s in juniors as her uniform is a blouse, tie & a skirt. In infants when she had a polo & jumper she would stay in them until bath time on non-activity evenings.

Echobelly · 13/10/2020 19:21

I never got changed after school - I know there is some thinking they ought to take it off because of Covid, but I'm really not convinced that surfaces have a lot to do with transmission.

DD sometimes changes if it's a PE day and her stuff is sweaty

museumum · 13/10/2020 19:22

Ds goes to after school club till 5:30 so he plays out in his uniform.
He doesn’t change when he gets home. He wears a new uniform each day (they don’t wear ties or blazers).
I hadn’t really thought about Covid germs to be honest but if there was a positive case in our school community I might start a change/shower routine.

Calabasa · 13/10/2020 19:22

They really ought to be changing immediately they come home right now.. washing hands, change of clothes...etc.

Mine have always changed into their pjs when they get home, i'd rather wash those regularly, than their uniform, which i can't put in the tumble dryer and needs to be left on the airer to dry!

LlamaofDrama · 13/10/2020 19:22

My DD10 changes if she feels like it, or if she's required to for an activity. I did try to make changing after school a habit when she first started and failed. But I don't really mind her not wearing two sets of clothes a day for me to wash.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 13/10/2020 19:24

We got changed when I was a child but (1) uniform was more expensive than our own clothes so had to be looked after and (2) it announced we were Catholic and you didn't want to telegraph that where we lived. As neither point applied I wasn't getting DD to change last year but I do now (covid) and everything gets washed straight away. She bloody loves an outfit change too.
