I know I've posted before about this but I'm not sure where else to go for support. My doctor sold the mirena coil to me like it was going to be life changing and that I should just expect a little bit of spotting. I had no idea that I would be bleeding like a regular period for almost a month. I had blood tests done last week and even though I take Iron, my levels have dropped. I've been put on a much higher dose of ferrous sulphate to get them back up. I feel completely drained. I've had an ultrasound and the iud is in the correct place. I'm going to persevere for at least 3 months as I know it can take a while to settle down, but I just want to cry. Please tell me it might get better?

My first settled down within a couple of weeks and it was brilliant. This one however took longer to settle but I wasnt continuously bleeding but I definitely get more cramps with this one and do have light periods.

Had mine fitted, fell pregnant and lost the baby. Awful, DP had vasectomy because I was done with it all

Mabelface · 06/01/2021 11:39

I'm having my 5th and final one fitted this month. No periods for 20 years. I'd persevere for a little longer, but ultimately if you're unhappy with it, it's your body and choice to have it removed if it doesn't suit you.

I had a mirena coil fitted, spotted almost every day and my skin broke out .... awful acne across my jawline (have always had clear skin before)

I went to have it removed, it had fused itself to the wall of my womb...i was in such pain. I had to have a d&c under general anaesthetic to have it removed.

My DH had a vasectomy.

I hesitate to post my story but if it helps;

I had mine fitted under a spinal anaesthetic - within twenty minutes of being out of theatre they were handing me oramorph, diclofenac suppository, all sorts , spent the night in hospital in agony .

Told it would settle, it was normal to be painful . It never did settle - I was back and forth to hospital continually from day one and on stupidly strong pain relief .

It was three more years before they agreed to remove the bloody thing . They only agreed when I blacked out at work with cervical shock - the coil was half out of my cervix .

Never, ever again - I’d rather live with the problematic periods because at least they only last 7-10 days !!

I spotted for 6 months then had regularly monthly bleeds/periods on it still.

Have 18 months I had it taken out and then discovers the constant itch was down to it - I think the threads irritated me.

No hormones seemed to control my periods/bleeding ended up have life changing womb ablation.

ThePlantsitter · 06/01/2021 12:05

I've just realised I said I bled for 6 months! I meant weeks - sorry - massive difference! I wouldn't have put up with it for 6 months.

SeptSpiral · 06/01/2021 12:07

The coil was awful for me. I had 8 months of 8-9 day very heavy periods, persevered with it in the hope it would settle down but it never did. I have so much more energy now I’m on the mini pill

Zackswife · 07/06/2021 17:44

Please tell me if got better?

Topseyt · 07/06/2021 18:02

Mine never got better. 13 months of bleeding heavily, which was one of the things it was supposed to be a miracle cure for. It was also meant to shrink fibroids which were causing the heavy bleeding in the first place. It didn't. They grew, both in size and in number.

Useless. Never again. I also had to be really assertive in order to actually get a doctor to remove it! They always wanted me to"just give it a bit more time." Apparently indefinitely.

In January this year I had an extremely heavy bleed that felt more like a haemorrhage and scared the shit out of me. That was when I put my foot down and refused to let them leave it in there any longer.

StapMe · 07/06/2021 19:00

I had one fitted at age 49 to try to sort heavy periods/clotting due to fibroids. Had a d&c or whatever they call it now, and it was fitted whilst I was still under anaesthetic. Periods stopped straight away, and didn't come back until I had a light flow at age 55. Went to GP who removed it ( no problem) and sent me to have insides checked out as he thought I was past menopause. Nothing there and it just turned out that was my last period. Side effects were tender and enlarged breasts and a few pimples the first month or so after fitting. Then nothing. It was absolutely brilliant for me, losing those rotten heavy periods and all the flooding and faff that went with them was brilliant. I would have had one fitted at puberty if I'd known how good it was. So my experience totally different to pp.
