To ask for advice muscle aches all over the body?

DS, 14, has had muscle aches all over the body (no other symptoms) for months which have prevented his return to school this term. GP cannot make a diagnosis as blood and urine tests have come back normal. Ibuprofen and paracetamol have not helped with the pain.

I'd like some suggestions for pain relief please, natural remedies preferred. I really want to get him back to school given the disruption already experienced this year.

Also if anyone has experienced anything similar with their teen, I'd like some ideas for what the condition might be.

No vote needed! Don't know how to get rid of it.

Is he otherwise well?
Any muscle wasting?

Relaxing baths with magnesium salts may help

Sh05 · 11/10/2020 20:28

I was going to say magnesium and Vitamin D. Or even cod liver oil

Aquamarine1029 · 11/10/2020 23:53

Were all of your son's vitamin and mineral levels tested? First on my mind are magnesium, D, and potassium.

My second thought is that he may be in an extended period of growth.

I was also going to recommend Epsom Salt baths. Has he been tested for Fibromyalgia?

Have you asked the GP about Ehler Danos syndrome ? It's a spectrum and can be quite mild.

Sorry OP meant to be a bit clearer about that as the information in that link can be scary but it's really common and underdiagnosed as it can be so mild.

I second the elders danlos/hypermobility suggestion. I went through similar at 11/12 and after months finally saw the GP and various specialists. I was diagnoses with hypermobility but I’m inclined to think I have hypermobile elhers danlos as i get older. Hard to diagnose unless he has the usual bend joints etc but could explain it. Also with this the earlier it’s found the better as you can use conservative treatments and physio etc. Just a suggestion. Have a look at hypermobility first and then into elhers danlos as there are many different types

Anxiety? Tensing his muscles?

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 13/10/2020 10:38

Both myself and my son suffer hypermobility, for my son it has become worse as a teen not just the legs from growth spurts but could be affected by hormones, from my perspective was always worse pre cycle. Hope you can get him sorted soon xx

Does he drink lots of (or any) fizzy drinks? I read about someone who had these kind of symptoms and it turned out to be a sensitivity (not allergy) to aspartime. If you are keen on natural remedies then bioreasonance might give you some answers - I haven't used it but was considering it to try and find out a cause of my daughters eczema (she's 20)

My daughter went through severe, severe muscle pain and tight muscle spasms last year. The pain was excruciating. Nothing helped. I found a blog after a lot of research about a lady who had same severe pain and it went away after she cut artificial sweetners and sugar alcohols from her diet. Things like xylitol, sucralose, sorbitol...we noticed her vitamins had artificial sweeteners. vitamins and juice. And low fat dairy she was eating. They add sweeteners in there. 2 weeks later pain began getting better, months later this pain is completely gone. Turned out to be a reaction to artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols. Theres medical journal describing a lady with fibromyalgia whos symptoms went away after she cut sucralose from her diet.
