Not sure if there is anything official but for the past few years my ds has been encouraged to take a bottle of water in everyday (and allowed to drink as and when) as it was found that children concentrate better when not thirsty (or something)

All the children in ds' primary have school issue water bottles on their desks - linked with the better concentration thing.

worth bringing up at a PTA type meeting sometime? Seems increasingly popular.

Healthy Living Blueprint for Schools. The DfES and DH published the Blueprint for Schools (Sept 2004). Objective 3 aims "to ensure that food and drink across the school day reinforces the healthy lifestyle message". The guidance for drinking water endorses our campaign message:"All pupils should have access to drinking water at all times at a number of points around the school, preferably not from taps in the toilets. Pupils should be permitted to carry water with them and consumption encouraged both in class and during break and lunch time." The Department of Education makes the advice on the location of facilities more explicit via its website TeacherNet: "drinking water should be available to pupils throughout the day at a number of points within a school, and not from taps or drinking fountains in the toilets".

i had to challenge ds1's teacher over this, and at the same time I also challenge her that she wouldn't let him go to the toilet, resulting in him messing himself horrid teacher

Thank you, Its funny you should mention the wetting themselves thing. I know a couple of boys have now that they have stopped letting them go to the loo during class.
Surely its easier to have them go to the loo for 2 mins than spend 7-10 mins sorting out new clothes, sorting out the mess. Getting the cleaner up bla bla bla....
I have written out the thing from the blueprint. Thank You

At dd's school they take their own bottle of water and are allowed to refill it during the day if they need to.
