Daughter has just eaten off chicken - help

FancyAnOlive · 10/10/2020 20:05

My dd (12) just ate loads of cooked chicken from an open packet in the fridge - she saw sell by date 11.10 so thought it was fine but it really stinks, it's definitely off. She's very upset, she's autistic and freaking out about being sick, worried she's going to die. Can I do anything to help her not get ill? I feel a bit panicky too - I'm normally very very careful with food and hygiene. Poor dd. Any ideas - presumably if she's going to get ill most likely tonight?

Activated charcoal?

FancyAnOlive · 10/10/2020 20:10

What's activated charcoal?

She may be fine. She might have sickness, just wait and see and reassure her that if she feels ok their is nothing to worry about.

june2007 · 10/10/2020 20:13

Medical charcoal is used to clean out the stumoch but apparently dastes gross and if your child isn,t ill it may not be necessery.

RunningFromInsanity · 10/10/2020 20:14

She’s probably going to be fine.
Just reassure her she isn’t going to die, that the stomach has lots of chemicals that will help to destroy the bad chicken.

DimidDavilby · 10/10/2020 20:15

The best thing you can do for her is calm down yourself. She'll probably be fine.

MrsGrindah · 10/10/2020 20:15

Just let nature take its course. If she’s sick it’s her body’s way of getting rid of something harmful. She can’t help panicking but you can.

Time2change2 · 10/10/2020 20:16

It may well be fine. You will know over night or early morning if not. Prep with the loo seat up and door open for a quick dash in the night. Bottle of water by her bed. Not much you can really do now and no point worrying her about it further as it may all be ok!

Time2change2 · 10/10/2020 20:18

Also As op said she is only panicking because you are. I have an 11 year old DD and recently fed the entire family chicken which I realised whilst we were half way through it tasted really funny. My DH has prepped it and he has a very weak sense of smell so didn’t realise when opening it.
Panicked internally but would never have told any of the kids!
Panicked all evening but it all turned out fine and no one was sick

Oysterbabe · 10/10/2020 20:18

Do you know when it was opened? Packed meat can smell quite grim. She'll more than likely be fine, bodies are quite robust.

Fionasmammy · 10/10/2020 20:19

Oh please shell be fine chilllllll

trashcanjunkie · 10/10/2020 20:20

as PP said - it can stink really bad without being off so she's probably fine.

dementedpixie · 10/10/2020 20:20

Did it not taste weird? She'll likely be ok. Not much you can do except wait and see

FancyAnOlive · 10/10/2020 20:22

Thank you all. I'm not that panicky- she is very anxious about eating bad food and being sick so I don't think her anxiety is just picking up on mine. We realised it was off because her sister ate one mouthful and said it tasted disgusting. I've told her she will probably be fine. It honestly smelled revolting though, I don't know how she didn't notice. Fingers crossed!

I watched a programme once where the presenter ate progressively more out of date food, including chicken. Even when the food was weeks out of date it had no effect on him. Fingers crossed for your DD.

I think it was probably opened on Tuesday. I'd have thought it would be ok, given that the use by date is tomorrow but it really honks.

Sometimes it's the packaging that smells,

FancyAnOlive · 10/10/2020 20:32

Definitely the chicken not the packaging.

Processed meat is a proven Class 1 carcinogen (that comes direct from the World Health Organisation). I'd be more worried about that than a sell by date.

Cripesitsthegasman19 · 10/10/2020 20:39

I once ate ham that was 3 weeks off date and didn't get so much as a tummy ache. Hope she's ok.

It's pieces of grilled chicken breast. So I guess a bit processed but it's not been reformed into 'chicken ham' or anything like that. Waitrose own brand. I don't think it's massively carcinogenic.

Honestly, it’ll be fine. Cooked chicken packed in plastic smells absolutely filthy.

blue25 · 10/10/2020 21:03

If the chicken is actually off it can be quite dangerous, so keep a close eye on her.

OwlBeThere · 10/10/2020 21:05

She might be fine, a friend in uni ate a raw, green chicken breast once: she didn’t do much as puke 🤷🏼‍♀️🤢
