My friend is away in a country that a few days into her holiday brought in quarantine restrictions upon returning to the UK. No big deal to her, she can wfh and organise deliveries etc.

She just told me she was chatting around the pool and people are confused about when quarantine actually 'starts'. Most have convinced themselves it's the day after you land 'to give them time to go shopping and get food and everything ready and stuff'.

So you're quarantined, but you have a magical window of time where you can get supplies and merrily skip round the supermarket infecting everyone saying 'Oh, I'm not in quarantine until tomorrow'.

I'm not sure if they're spectacularly thick or just so entitled they've twisted the rules to suit themselves. I don't normally get annoyed about CV or what other people do but really!?

@FrizzyHairMalarkey

I didn't say that now did I? I did not once say that the things that were said to Popsicle were not stupid, I was commenting on what YOU had said that basically said MN was full of racists. That was what I was disagreeing with. The two are mutually exclusive.

Where did I say that MN full of racists? Saying that MNers are silent on treatment of Muslims is not saying MN is full of racists.

The fact is you were hurt by my saying that MN is silent, that is what you chose to comment on, rather than the abhorrent comments to Popsicle.

As always, the subtext to Muslims is don’t question racism against Muslims in case you hurt the feelings of non-Muslims.

When I was about 19 I had a mind blowing conversation with a girlfriend who didn’t use tampons as she couldn’t be doing with taking them out every time she wanted to wee. Transpired she thought her urethra and vagina were one and the same!

I still think about this and feel shocked!

belinda789 · 11/10/2020 11:26

“How do you kill a sausage?” To be fair, it was a three year old child.......

happinessischocolate · 11/10/2020 11:27

@JaJaDingDong

A colleague once asked me why there are so few incidences of identical different sex twins, when it's quite common in same sex twins.
I asked a friend if his girlfriend and her twin sister were identical twins and he laughed saying they can't be, identical twins are always boy/girl. I like to think that he did realise he was wrong early on in the following discussion and that he carried on sticking to his opinion due to stubbornness rather than belief he was right 😁

just asked DP about George Elliott
he is the least well read person on the world
he knew she was an author and made a decent guess as to her period
so I'd say it is general knowledge

General in your class, culture and context.

FrizzyHairMalarkey · 11/10/2020 11:30

@SharonasCorona
Where did I say that MN full of racists? Saying that MNers are silent on treatment of Muslims is not saying MN is full of racists.

What did you actually mean then? Because you said MNers are either silent or complicit against treatment of Muslims.

Which sounds pretty accusatory to me...

The fact is you were hurt by my saying that MN is silent, that is what you chose to comment on, rather than the abhorrent comments to Popsicle.
You are misinterpreting what I said, I am not hurt because I am not a racist nor have I said anything racist. Just because I didn't say anything about the stupid comments was because they ARE stupid comments. Which is what this thread is about. There was no NEED for me to comment...

As always, the subtext to Muslims is don’t question racism against Muslims in case you hurt the feelings of non-Muslims.
Utter rubbish. That is NOT what this thread is about.

I picked up on what YOU said because this was a thread about stupid things people have said. Popsicles post was quoting what stupid things people had said. Therefore since I wasn't arguing with her that the things that were said to here weren't racist, one could take it that I agreed they were stupid. I repeat: By not commenting that the things were stupid, I WAS NOT tacitly (by ommission) saying that they weren't stupid. I was pointing out that YOUR snide comment was IRRELEVANT to THIS thread, not that it was irrelevant full stop. It has NOTHING to do with whether I thought the comments to Popsicle were stupid or not. You are deliberately misinterpreting my words and intentions. You are seeing a racist snub where there is NONE.

YesThisIsMe · 11/10/2020 11:32
@YesThisIsMe

I'm pretty sure in the context of IQ, that's not how averages work Confused
Regardless of what you’re pretty sure of ScarMatty, that is how IQ scores work - 100 is designed to be the median (and is recalibrated regularly when the average IQ of the population increases).

To share the stupidest thing I have ever heard
ScarMatty · 11/10/2020 11:34

@YesThisIsMe

Absolutely, the median. Totally agree it's the median.

Don't agree it's the average.

YesThisIsMe · 11/10/2020 11:40

“Average” can be used to refer either to the median or the mean, or less frequently to the mode. Sometimes one is more useful, sometimes the other. In many cases it is important to specify which you are referring to. IQ scales however are designed to be normally distributed so the mean and the median are equal.

The people “correcting” the poster who said that 50% of people had an IQ below 100 with “that’s not how averages work” were wrong in two different ways.

SharonasCorona · 11/10/2020 11:47

@FrizzyHairMalarkey

What did you actually mean then?

I mean what is demonstrated on this thread and and 99% of other threads on MN. People may not be racist to Muslims themselves but they are silent on treatment of Muslims because they would prefer not to be faced with it and think it’s not that bad or that Muslims should just deal with it. Posters like Gold even imply it’s the Muslim person’s fault (Popsicle was criticised for not celebrating Christmas rather being told the comments she received were wrong). That is complicity.

You are misinterpreting what I said, I am not hurt because I am not a racist nor have I said anything racist.

I didn’t say you were hurt because you are racist at all ( Hmm ). I said you were hurt by my saying MNers are silent. It would have been nicer if you were hurt on Popsicle’s behalf that she was told all Muslims are terrorists.

Utter rubbish. That is NOT what this thread is about.

This thread started about a CV19, but Popsicle’s comments and subsequent debate is valid, yet you keep insisting that it is irrelevant.

I was pointing out that YOUR snide comment was IRRELEVANT to THIS thread, not that it was irrelevant full stop

How is it irrelevant? By your logic Muslims should never share their experiences because it could lead to a situation like Popsicle‘s where she has shared her experiences and then faces whatabouttery in the form ‘why aren’t you celebrating Christmas’.

You’ve made this all about your feelings, Frizzy which just proves my point that.

SharonasCorona · 11/10/2020 12:01

@FrizzyHairMalarkey Just did a search as you said you post loads to defend Muslims and the very first post that came up was you defending a white man who put anti-BLM posts on his Facebook and said “black people, if your lives matter why do you kill each other”*.

I’m done.

FrizzyHairMalarkey · 11/10/2020 12:31

@SharonasCorona

Sigh, I was NOT defending him, please, READ my posts properly, I was questioning an unproved point and giving another possible viewpoint, if you had bothered to READ!! I also did not say that I had "posted loads to defend Muslims". If you actually bothered to READ my posts, rather than skimming then assuming you know what I'm saying, I said I had defended you and Popsicle under a different user name.. I give up. Please continue to assume things about me after misreading and misinterpreting things according to your own agenda.

That seahorses were mythical creatures ya know - like unicorns 😂

cricketmum84 · 11/10/2020 12:33

@Muchtoomuchtodo I wonder if you had the same colleague 😂 one of mine asked what date Halloween falls on this year.

FrizzyHairMalarkey · 11/10/2020 12:34

@SharonasCorona
I have in fact just gone back and re-read the thread you are dredging up and I actually stated that I was NOT defending the man concerned just gave another viewpoint. Well done on twisting things though.

happinessischocolate · 11/10/2020 12:35

@IceColdFan

I tell a story about a silly thing I used to think. I was young, about 5-6 years old, and in our town we had a hire store that hired our equipment like mini diggers and tools that most people only need for a few days/ one job at home. It was called very simply ‘Plant Hire’. In my mind this equated to rich people hiring fancy and exotic plants for garden parties. Because of course they don’t have time to take care of the plants so only hire them for a party they we’re having 😂.

I was in my 20’s visiting the shop which by then was an off license and remember chuckling to myself about it.

I'm in my 50s and I distinctly remember the cover of a girls magazine annual (Judy maybe?) from when I was 5/6 with a girl on the front pushing a wheelbarrow with a large cheese plant in it across a road, next to a sign saying "large plant crossing" and I didn't understand the relevance or the joke. It was probably another 10 years before I understood it. 😁

In part I agree. Average is an umbrella term for the median etc

My new DIL told me she “was trying for twins”
Me- “how do you plan on doing that ?”

I can top you lot. The most ridiculously stupidest thing I’ve seen is a ‘friend’ on FB posting “Well done Boris you’re doing a fantastic job”. 😳😳🤪
I like your friend. And Boris.

GMT TV spent an entire morning reporting how '50% of NHS hospitals are below average'

ANoTail · 11/10/2020 13:04

In year 7 a boy asked me what day it was. I told him Tuesday. Then he asked if I knew what day it would be tomorrow. Wednesday, I said. Little bit perturbed here. He asked me how I knew. Apparently, he'd never realised that the days of the week came in the same order each time.
He'd been entirely homeschooled prior to secondary school and claimed he "never really needed to know what day it was".
