To ask how to avoid thrush from antibiotics

Plussizejumpsuit · 10/10/2020 13:34

I'm unfortunately on my second set of antibiotics for a reoccurring sinus infection. Last time I got thrush which I do often get when I take antibiotics if I'm remembering rightly. Although it's been several years sine I'd had them before this bout of illness.

Obviously no one really want to get thrush. However last time it was hard to get rid of. I had an allergic reaction to fluconazole which was awful, so I'm stuck with the pessary and cream. Given thrush is awful anyway and I might struggle to get rid of it can I ask for any advice on anything I can do to prevent it.

I've bought some yakault. To attempt to keep my good bacteria up but that's just on the off chance it helps.

Avoid yeast and sugar whilst taking them
And eat a shit load of live yoghurt!! Good luck!!

Waveysnail · 10/10/2020 13:38

And if your suffering with sinuses then I found cutting out dairy from my diet worked wonders. Took couple of weeks to see the difference

beepbeepsheep · 10/10/2020 13:43

Taking a probiotic like acidophilus @Waveysnail has mentioned has helped me in the past.

Plussizejumpsuit · 10/10/2020 14:03

I'll try the tablets thanks. I only really eat cheese with dairy. Maybe yoghurt one a week or less. But I'm vegetarian so the cheese is fairly important in my diet. I will look at the vegan options though and see if it helps. I have heard dairy is linked to mucus production do it makes sense that it would have an impact on sinuses.

My feeling is that you can’t eliminate the risk completely
The body works in a balance ‘good’ bacteria versus ‘bad’ bacteria. Antibiotics disrupt the balance and you get thrush
Definitely try the acidophilus tho Maybe buy some canestan Ahead of time

It sucks tho

FortunaMajor · 10/10/2020 14:26

Are your antibiotics penicillin based? I used to have this problem with anything penicillin based, especially with amoxycillin. I now refuse to be prescribed it and have always been given another type. Never had a problem since.

Between multiple doctors and dentists over a few years, none have had an issue with my request to avoid it.

44PumpLane · 10/10/2020 14:33

If the thrush is that awful and you're looking to avoid it..... Put some live natural yogurt on your vulva and in your vagina.

Sounds ridiculous but the good bacteria in the yogurt, topically applied, will help to supplement the good bacteria that the antibiotics will be killing off and hopefully prevent the candida flourishing.

Obviously I'm not talking about sticking a muller light on your nether, but a live, unsweetened, natural yogurt. Probably just overnight or if you're sitting about the house, and you'd probably want some sort of towel in your pants or things could get a bit messy.

Also, I'm not taking the piss with the above..... Have a Google it's a legitimate natural remedy.

PollyPelargonium52 · 10/10/2020 14:48

Put natural preferably live plain yoghurt on a tampon and change here and there. Really helps.

Misskittyfantastico85 · 10/10/2020 14:56

Was just coming on to say acidophilus, but see its already been mentioned. I was advised in Holland and barratt to take 2 per day whilst taking antibiotics and then 1 per day thereafter

Skysblue · 10/10/2020 15:33

When I was prescribed antibiotics in Greece, they also told me to buy a probiotic pessary to prevent thrush. They said it was standard advice to women over there and were amazed I hadn’t heard of this. You can buy it on amazon.

British GPs don’t do that because they are rubbish at anything to do with female health. (I’ve met at least a dozen doctors in my ‘gynae journey’ and the only one who was any good was from Greece.)

BashfulClam · 10/10/2020 16:06

Acidophilus works really well (keep them in the fridge as they die in the heat). I also take them before going abroad and touch wood I have never had any stomach problems as the good bacteria in them prevents any bad bacteria taking hold. Last time I didn’t take them as we booked on the Thursday to fly on the Saturday and I felt quite sick for a few days.

Pachonga · 10/10/2020 16:08

Eat low carb whilst you’re on them. Avoiding sugar itself is good but won’t be enough if you’re still eating stuff that your body turns into glucose.

To be honest that's not really an option with my vegetarian diet. Especially if I'm trying to avoid dairy too. What is the link with carbs / sugar and thrush? I'll obvs do some research too.

Ain't that the truth! I have heavy periods and adenomyosis. So have experience of GPs and gyne stuff!

Canesten make a probiotic pessary, it’s called ‘Canesflor’. You use it as a course. It works.

LaBellina · 10/10/2020 17:02

Avoid sugar
Eat probiotics such as Greek yoghurt
Wear cotton underwear and change regulary
Dry yourself very carefully after bath or shower is what pharmacist told me last time I picked up anti thrush medicine. Keep the area dry.

Plussizejumpsuit · 10/10/2020 17:04

I'm going to buy some of the h&b tablets in about half an hour when I pop out. The yoghurt I eat if any is plain active Greek yoghurt so I know the difference between that an muller light but thanks for the concern! Grin I can only imagine the disaster that would be!

Yes it's amoxocillin@FortunaMajor as was the last round. That's interesting that you think they have the worst effect.

Don't know if its tmi but with being ill then the thrush then I had my period I'd actually also really not like to get thrush again so I can actually have some sex!

Thanks really appreciate the replies.

Multi-Gyn ActiGel. I had thrush on and off for about a year that was triggered by sex (even though my partner was treated multiple times). I’d take tablets but obviously would have to wait until I actually had symptoms. I’d use this after sex as a preventative and have only had one flare up in 2 years. It helps restore ph and balance and is save to use everyday Smile

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 10/10/2020 19:01

I have tried probiotics, live yogurt and adjusted diet and it has made no difference whatsoever! I always get thrush with antibiotics! So annoying!

Anquin · 11/10/2020 10:14

I always take Optibac when I’m prescribed antibiotics - there are 2 different types. The pharmacist will tell you which one is better for your prescription. Never had thrush with antibiotics while taking these with them!
