Keep hearing really annoying advert on Radion2 asking if your child had a TV license at University.

AIBU that this grates on my ears - these ‘children’ are legal adults and surely it’s their responsibility?

And although they need one if they own a TV, if they are just watching on their phone or laptop, they don't actually need one as long as it isn't plugged in when they are using it (yes, seriously!)

It wouldn’t grate at all for me, they are still someone’s ‘child’ and might have turned 18 the week before going to university. One doesn’t become an all knowing adult by that time and I would have thought that some need a bit of support to learn things like that.

Jumpingkangeroo · 10/10/2020 05:13

I also think it’s usually parents of much younger children who are very dismissive of anyone over 18 needing a bit of help or parental support.

I think the concept of a tv licence is completely ridiculous and I never paid for one as a student. The advert is stupid too, you can’t guilt trip a parent for decisions that their adult children make.

I moved away to university when I was 17 and I knew what a bloody TV licence was! It's insulting to infantalise university students like that - they are adults!

Yes, this is what grates. Obviously most uni students are still dependent for support and help, but they are still adults and capable! If the add said ‘talk to your child about getting a TV license’ it wouldn’t annoy me so much. But the way the ad is worded totally puts the onus on the parents.

Not all university students are legal adults though. In Scotland you could be going to uni at 16.
