Holiday Home Kitchen AIBU

We are staying in a holiday home this week, which has a lovely big kitchen (house sleeps up to 8), but the equipment in the kitchen is weird. For example there are only 2 small frying pans and no electric scales. On the other hand there is a flan dish, a sieve and 3 or 4 very big knives!

AIBU to think nobody is making flan or butchering a chicken in their holiday home!

The holiday cottage we just stayed in had everything I could think of. I didn’t expect to find a cheese grater, but there was one. 4 frying pans, 5 different size pans. Lots of sharp knives. And a garlic press.

But no scales........

Twickerhun · 09/10/2020 19:43

I don’t own electric scales in my own house

1Morewineplease · 09/10/2020 19:44

Expecting digital scales, in a holiday home, is bizarre!
We usually expect basic equipment,eg... roasting dish, baking sheet, a couple of saucepans, colander, frying pan, basic knives , cutting board and the like.
Most holidayl lets provide what you would reasonably need when away from home.

Never digital scales.

The last holiday cottage I stayed in a remote Scottish location ( 20:plus miles to nearest food shop) had a fridge so small that could could only fit the smallest size milk bottle in it. No room for any other perishables other than small packs of individually wrapped butter. Every day had to be a shopping trip. The cottage slept 4 adults and was otherwise well furnished/ equipped. It was summer so it was warm , I imagine for much of the year you could leave things outside. But I’ve never seen such a minuscule fridge. My review was deleted by owner.

Fluffybutter · 09/10/2020 19:55

So you don’t think anyone would make a flan but yet you’d expect scales ?

SpongePuddingMama · 09/10/2020 20:03

YANBU - I stayed in a holiday cottage once with six forks for eight people Hmm

Inthemuckheap · 09/10/2020 20:07

But but but does it have grape scissors?

CounsellorTroi · 09/10/2020 20:08

@supersonicginandtonic

The ones we stay in always have a rubbish frying pan! We neeed non stick and why is there never a corkscrew! I'm on holiday I want wine.
There's always screw top bottles if you get desperate!

But yes we would always take a corkscrew if staying somewhere we hadn't stayed before.

naemates · 09/10/2020 20:12

I'm just back from a cottage where the owner gave us a lovely free bottle of wine, but only one toilet roll for 5 days 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Fluffybutter

To be fair, you need scales to make the pastry
waterandlemonjuice · 09/10/2020 20:16

I’d never need scales on holiday it just wouldn’t occur to me

Jaxhog · 09/10/2020 20:18

More importantly, was there a pasta maker? I couldn't do without one of those.

DarkMintChocolate · 09/10/2020 20:24

We’ve just come back from a holiday cottage, which slept 6. It had manual scales, which were fine - I use them to weigh out rice and pasta. It had two large frying pans. I thought the potato peeler was rubbish though! My DM always took her own potato peeler, and now I can see why!

However, the Dimplex and heated towel rail in the bathroom didn’t work, so it was rather cool in the bathroom!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/10/2020 20:27

I could make pastry without scales

MiddleClassProblem · 09/10/2020 20:28

Last place I went to didn't have a mandoline, I'll never go there again Wink

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/10/2020 20:29

Kitchens are often abysmally equipped. I always take a sharp knife, a small shopping board, a wooden spoon and a large non stick wok. I used to take a cheese grater, must have left that somewhere though.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/10/2020 20:29

@MiddleClassProblem don't blow my cover GrinBlushGrin

Pelleas · 09/10/2020 20:29

Never seen them in a holiday let, and only have manual scales at home. I would never want the faff of cooking anything that needed weighed ingredients on holiday! I only get food that's bung in the oven/on the hob/under the grill.

Always take a corkscrew if you are a wine drinker! Though 9/10 times I've found a basic corkscrew provided.

😂

Bet your cupcakes at the bake sale are well nice though!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/10/2020 20:30

I want a shopping board - does it go to the supermarket on your behalf?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/10/2020 20:31

@MiddleClassProblem Mrs Kipling CakeWineGin

No. A small shopping board is a group of about 4-5 people who discuss and approve your list. It’s more of a nuisance than anything.
MiddleClassProblem · 09/10/2020 20:33

@BewareTheBeardedDragon you soak them in booze? Defo £1 not 50p ones

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/10/2020 20:41

@MiddleClassProblem Christ - no, don't want one of them then. 😂😂😂

I soak myself in the alcohol as I work hard preparing the cakes (covering my supermarket tracks by disposing of the packaging). Not before the school run you understand Grin
