Republicans of MN! (I know you're on here) What do you think about Gilead?

For those not familiar, Gilead is the futuristic society depicted in The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

The main thing that characterises Gilead is that it's really big on Law and Order. Crime rates are very low, and a lot of offences are punished by the death penalty, including abortion (that's the other thing - they're very, very pro-life).

As a society they're all about Christian values, leaning more towards the Old Testament. Education is structured around the bible, and it underpins their whole way of life.

Another thing about Gilead is that it championed a return to traditional gender roles, with women as homemakers and primary childcarers. Definitely no feminism! The man is the head of the household, and his word is law. A number of the women in Gilead were in favour of this change and played a strong part in bringing any naysayers up to speed, arguing that the pressure on modern women to 'have it all' (career, children, the vote etc) was actually quite damaging.

What else. Well, hard borders, probably the hardest of any country in the world. Little or no immigration, certainly. Really strong economy - the best!

As with any society, there are downsides to Gilead, although they only really affect those who don't play ball, or don't make any effort to fit in. Basically, if you adhere to Christian values, and are loyal to Gilead's leaders, you'll be fine.

So, what are your thoughts on all this? I ask because, what with all the Trump threads, I'm learning a lot about how his supporters think and I'm genuinely interested to know how deeply you hold these beliefs and values.

YABU = I'm a proud Republican and I'd certainly give it a go!
YANBU = Call me a snowflake, but something about this sounds iffy.

(The rest of you fuckers Grin BEHAVE, OK? Don't scare them off. I'm genuinely trying to learn a bit more about what's going on over there.)

Just leaving this here. The colour suits her.....
Personally I would be in the colonies as I'm past my childbearing years, can't cook and have an issue with authority. Best place for me Wink

@MintChocAddict Excellent Grin

ALL roles in Gilead are equally valued. You will be performing an important public service.

An American pastor was on Radio 4 at lunchtime today saying that he endorsed Trump last time and that evangelists would flock to the polls for Trump now. His reasoning was that Trump was doing a great job by filling the judiciary with pro-life judges.

I would have more respect for them if their concern for the protection of the unborn child didn't stop at birth, immigrant children separated from parents and placed in cages doesn't seem to bother them in the slightest.

It is now 10.30am in Texas. Soon, the Republicans will walk among us...

Every society thinks they'll last forever. I think if you boil enough frogs together, a few of them will realise what's happening but the others won't jump out. Sad

Currently obsessed with Gilead and it’s awfulness!

ShebaShimmyShake · 09/10/2020 17:09

I'm pretty sure Atwood made a point of not including anything in Gilead that hadn't really happened at some point in history.

Without being that person is the economy in Gilead actually that great? Obviously everyone is told it is, but I seem to recall talk of various products being out of stock at the supermarket whenever the handmaids went shopping. Plus in the testaments June's daughter who was adopted by a commander family talked about not having any additional clothes than her school ones because it was wasteful. It has been a while since I've read HT though...

Apart from anything else, losing a huge % of your consumer base (as most women stopped working plus the loss of non white people), lack of tourism, huge proportion of the entertainment industry, plus the cost of waging almost continuous internal war against the various non-Gilead parts of the former US, and the level of "peacekeeping"/law enforcement needed, doesn't exactly scream "likely capitalist economic success."

@thevassal Those are all excellent and not even remotely seditious points. Where exactly did you say you were located? Ah, not to worry; we've found you.
