To ask over 50s to check in to show we are not a separate breed of Mumsnetters

COVID has really brought out the ageism on Mumsnet! Over 50s are not an homogeneous group sucking on our Werther's Originals longing for the social centre to re-open so we can resume whist drives and coach trips to outlet stores with a nice cafe attached!

I'm mum to DC who's taking their GCSEs next year and I will have to continue working to support them through uni and because I enjoy working AND I have a mortgage!

So stop trying to lock us down - the economy needs us as taxpayers and consumers!

I’m over 50 , frontline worker FT , walk dog , run , go to gym , eat out etc , kids at Uni .
I haven’t noticed any ageism but it’s possible it’s just not on my radar - perhaps I’m ageist as I associate whist drives and coach trips with over 80’s .

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 08/10/2020 15:24

My youngest is still in primary and I'm not the oldest mum in their year. I worked throughout lock down.
Same goes for the vulnerable.

iVampire · 08/10/2020 15:24

School age DC. Marathon runner (first this year!)

Mintjulia · 08/10/2020 15:26

Wine I'm over 50 with a DS (12). There must be plenty of us. Smile

MissScarletInTheSnug · 08/10/2020 15:26

I'm over 50 (just) one of my kids is still at school and I am a front line worker.

I would love to be "sucking on our Werther's Originals longing for the social centre to re-open so we can resume whist drives and coach trips to outlet stores with a nice cafe attached!" Grin

Ted27 · 08/10/2020 15:28

I'm 55, single parent to a 16 year old with ASD. No else is paying my mortgage, family all live 2 hours away and are proper old, late 70s. So no support there.
So no I will not be locked away

SecretWitch · 08/10/2020 15:28

I am 55, stay at home mother , three children... two adult children out of home and one teenager. I have been doing home Ed for five years,

MN definitely has issues with ageism. I have seen posts containing “old hag” and the like. I report it every time I come across it here.

WhyAreThereNoNamesLeft · 08/10/2020 15:29

I’m not, but DH is 50.

DC in primary school. Our mortgage runs for another 20 years..... (we intend to pay it off we’ll before then but I’m rather surprised that was even allowed!)

streakofmalevolence · 08/10/2020 15:29

55 working in ITU busy city hospital
Gym for body combat, body pump just bought a Peloton bike

BoulangerieBabs · 08/10/2020 15:29

I'm over 50, still got one teen dc and work full time.

The ageist attitude of lock us up so the 'young' can get on with their lives has pissed me off, really pissed me off.

BillieEilish · 08/10/2020 15:30

Just turned 50 with a 12 year old.

Not old in the least. Many new mother here at 40 plus. My lawyer/doctor etc friends all just turned 50 and look wonderful and pay shedloads of tax and have primary aged DC's.

I think we're all supposed to join Gransnet. It's pathetic.

49 is fine but the minute you say 50 people are SO ageist, it's incredible.

Hi - I’m well into my 50s and have a chronic health issue. However, still the main breadwinner in our house and seeing a daughter through GCSEs this year. Worked throughout lockdown in NHS.

Varjakpaw · 08/10/2020 15:33

I’m 55 and I’ve been disgusted at the number of not just lock them up comments but even “they’ve had their turn let them die” comments. I wish now I had thought to report. I the time I just shut down MN.

lakeswimmer · 08/10/2020 15:33

50 here with three dependent children. I'm fitter than I've ever been and not due to pay off my mortgage for 20 years so no plans to give up work anytime soon!

Varjakpaw · 08/10/2020 15:34

Sorry, want to add I worked right through lock down.

Hadalifeonce · 08/10/2020 15:36

I am 63, work part time plus volunteer, 1 DC at uni 1 in school, play tennis and have an active social life ( not quite so active ATM). Support my brother who has learning difficulties, among other problems. So very active and involved.

Devlesko · 08/10/2020 15:36

I'm over 50 and lost my work, that might mean retirement, who knows.
I have 2 grandchildren which despite local lockdowns we have decided to still meet at each other's houses as my dc are all working from home and not going anywhere.
Never been in a gym in my life, nor to outlets shopping with friends.
Don't go to coffee shops.
Mortgage paid years ago, one dependant left 6th form boarder.
Me and dh just spend most days together, go to bed when we want, the freedom is wonderful.
I feel much younger than I did when kids were little so about 30 atm Grin

Ponoka7 · 08/10/2020 15:36

I'm over 50, had my children young so they are all adults. I prop up two families with childcare, neither could work if I didn't.

The ageism is terrible on this board and was ignored for quite a while, but it's now treated nearly the same as other discrimination.

FuzzyPuffling · 08/10/2020 15:37

Hello all! Lovely idea for a thread; I was getting very disheartened.
I'm quite a bit over 50, and love nothing more than bodyboarding in the waves near home. Or some coast path walking ( no sticks required, and I can get over stiles on my own, in quite a frisky fashion).
I've just been digging the garden and planting some large hydrangeas.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/10/2020 15:40

Hovering around 50 here. Full time responsible job, breadwinner, mortgage (with quite some time left to go), etc. Soo many things to do with my life yet - and sucking a Werthers Original (yuck!) is not one of them! 50 is the new 40 doncha know - or maybe even the new 35....

ThePittts · 08/10/2020 15:43

Hello, another well over 50!
Worked all through lockdown, and also shopped so not to take the delivery spots for people that need them. Baby sit for grandchildren so dil can still go to work. What a great thread :)

FlyingByTheSeatof · 08/10/2020 15:45

Over 50, kids still at school, work FT as a nurse.

PilatesPeach · 08/10/2020 15:45

Fitness instructor teaching over 20 classes a week plus do my own exercise running, yoga & body pump, walk my dog am fittest I have ever been in my life, single, no children, need to work to live but love what I do having retrained a few years ago from being a lawyer which I hated.

3catsandcounting · 08/10/2020 15:45

I'm 57 (or so my birthday certificate says!) work full-time at primary school, 2 DCs at uni. I'm fit and healthy and miss evenings out with my friends and yoga classes.
I have to smile to myself when the younger posters talk about the over 50s.
Bless them. 🤣😂

janetmendoza · 08/10/2020 15:46
