I dont hate the royals nor do i like them. I was talking toa friend who hates them for the usual reasons and she wants a republic but didn't actually know what it would look like. So what would happen?

Not sure AIBU is the best place for this.

I'm sure you could read up on the histories of other countries when they've transitioned from a monarchy to a republic.

contrmary · 08/10/2020 13:27

Higher taxes, Boris Johnson would be head of state.

Bluesheep8 · 08/10/2020 13:29

Yep, as things stand Bozza would be boss

DynamoKev · 08/10/2020 13:50

I am sure we could fuck it up somehow. We seem quite good at that. We helped Zimbabwe become a republic and look how well that ended.

pointythings · 08/10/2020 14:00

I don't think anything would change. Her Madge never goes against the government, so BoJo would just continue to be the boss and fuck everything up.

Until someone had the balls to introduce proper proportional representation, the UK would continue to be a stale two party system barely worthy of being called a democracy.

DGRossetti · 08/10/2020 14:02

We've managed to become a republic when no one was looking, since the Queen has fuck all power. It's the worst of both worlds. A completely useless Monarch who costs a fortune to maintain, and a president in all but name in the shape of the Prime Minister. I would also note that we can't even vote for our PM, but since Americans can't vote for their President either, it seems a bit of a niggle in the grand scheme of things.

I agree, especially about PR

Well it can't really because it's a United Kingdom.I
It'd have to split up into a few.

How does the monarch cost us a fortune? She volunteers to pay a lot more tax than she actually has to, and the sovereign grant is only 15% of what goes into the treasury from the crown estate.

When I can volunteer to pay tax, I'll come back to you. Until then you've rather made another case for getting rid of such an archaic and ludicrous institution.

You may have been OK telling your kids they can be whatever they set their sights on (except monarch). I wasn't. And still am not.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/10/2020 14:59

Nothing would change really. I never understood what do people think would happen. There wouldn't magically be more money to make everyone's lives better. There wouldn't be... Well anything really🤷🏻
Except that general public would just have to vote for another person (IF it was up to general public) and quite frankly, that will never end well.

debwong · 08/10/2020 15:31

Would we be required to have presidential debates?
