To ask if anyone knows about Paypal E-cheques

I hate Paypal but I was feeling lazy and went through a phase of ordering a few things using it.
There were some smaller items where the retailer was paid and has sent the items.
One item was £400+. Paypal have apparently made my payment an e-cheque. I didn't do anything different from the items that got paid immediately. The money has been taken from my account, but apparently Paypal won't give it to the retailer for some time.
It is not apparent why Paypal have chosen to make my payment an e-cheque or why they hang on to my cash for such an obscene amount of time. It's not possible to get hold of them to ask - their FAQ system doesn't provide any worthwhile information.

You can try the chat function or telephone PayPal

However, from my experience, I sometimes didn’t have a balance in my PayPal account and an E cheque was sent where my funding source was my bank account. Once I switched that to a debit card, I never had that happen again.

What do you have listed as your funding source?

If you’d like to make payment faster, ask the seller to cancel the transaction. You transfer funds into your PayPal account to cover the cost of your item and then purchase the item again. This way you still have the benefit of PayPal if anything happens with the purchase and the seller gets their money faster (and can provide you with what you purchased). The seller should not provide you with the item until they have received the funds.

To caveat that, if it’s a new seller, they may not receive the funds until after you receive the item and acknowledge that. However, that is not an e cheque situation rather than the seller having a hold on funds by PayPal. It’s a way of PayPal ensuring (or trying to) new sellers are genuine.

something similar happened to me, my bank rejected a direct debit to PayPal and an e-cheque was created and paid to them

Funding source is my bank account. I haven't had a balance in my Paypal account for ages.

They treated the small amounts differently though - and the FAQ about e-cheques talks about funding sources - but if that was the case why weren't all my transactions treated the same?

The chat said they might get back in a few hours.......

It looks as if there is a "secret" (because they don't mention it anywhere) limit above which they issue a e-cheque without mentioning what they have done, and then hold on to my cash for ages for no good reason. Sharks.

I think this will be the catalyst to closing my account after nearly 20 years - there is no advantage any longer.

Large, well established retailer, so not that.

Thanks so much - done that already or I wouldn't be asking here.

I got an email from PayPal this morning saying that my Echeque payment has cleared. I didn't do anything differently to send the money and it was only for £10, and I didn't even know it had gone as an Echeque.

DynamoKev · 08/10/2020 14:57

I got a response from PayPal which says they made my payment an e-cheque because they have some process that decides a transaction should be one. It apparently can’t be changed and they won’t say how it works, and once they have made it an e-cheque they can keep the money for ages. Seems like a great way for them to make money. I knew I was taking a risk using PayPal as they are essentially unregulated in the UK, but this (once I get my item after waiting 2-3 weeks) will encourage me to get on and do thx them.

Get on and ditch them.
