To think the coronation street storyline about Oliver is in poor taste?

Oliver has an incurable condition, and his parents are refusing to accept this, becoming hostile to the doctors treating him and trying to raise funds to bring in an ‘expert’ from abroad. There is now a legal dispute.

I thought it sounded similar to the Charlie Gard case, but it wasn’t until I googled I realised the character supposedly has the same condition as Charlie Gard did.

AIBU in thinking that’s in really, really poor taste? It’s virtually to the letter what happened and I can’t think of any other case where what happened in RL is mirrored in the soaps. On some occasions storylines have even been changed on this basis.

They had a new treatment that they wanted to try. UK hospitals said no because they didn't know if it would work. Thank god we didn't have the same mentality when things like penicillin were discovered.

I can’t even begin to explain everything that’s wrong with this comment.

it was Gosh that put an end to that

No, very sadly it was Charlie's condition that put an end to it.

there was treatment available thst had worked in several other children

This is simply not true. The treatment in question, nucleoside therapy, had only been used on 18 patients and had never been used on a patient with Charlie's condition. Nevertheless GOSH was prepared to try the treatment, although the doctor offering it, Dr Hirano did not come over to see Charlie when invited by GOSH. Before the treatment could start Charlie began having seizures which would inevitably cause serious and irreversible brain damage. Dr Murano had agreed that the treatment was highly unlikely to work in cases involving serious brain damage. GOSH therefore decided the treatment was pointless and there was no point putting Charlie through the potential pain and distress which the treatment would involve. Dr Hirano maintained that his treatment could help despite the fact that had never seen or assessed Charlie, nor had he had sight of his medical records and investigations, including the second opinions of doctors from outside GOSH. However, when he was eventually persuaded to come over to see Charlie, he agreed that the treatment could not assist.

This was an awful case and I felt desperately sad for Charlie's parents, but you do not do them any favours by misrepresenting the facts.

Leanne and Steve are definitely going to have grief sex though, that's a cert.
