To ask what to do when you witness a parked car being hit

I was parking in a multi story car park next to my DC’s school and the car in front of me hit into a car at a reasonable speed when parking. As I drove past I could see a dent around 15cm diameter in the front passenger side wheel arch of the (parked) car.

I was late for pick up and I really didn’t have any leeway because there are short windows for pickup now because of Covid so I took a quick photo from my car showing the number plates and ran off to collect DCs. The man who was driving the car didn’t appear to be leaving a note, he got out and checked his own car but didn’t check the parked car and then got back into his car to talk to his partner who was in the passenger side so it is possible that he got back in to write one but I’m not sure.

I had intended to check if the car had a note left on it when I got back (10-15 mins later). However, when I got back the parked car was gone. Should I report this to the car park owners or just leave it? I have the reg numbers of both cars. I’m really not sure what to do (if anything). Nobody else was around at the time but there might be cctv.

Ps I’m not really sure if it adds much but as it is technically a parking one I’ve attached a diagram.

Blue: non involved parked cars
Red: parked car that was hit
Purple: car that bumped into the parked car
Green: me

Definitely!

Thanks @nolovelost, I’m not really sure what the car park owners would do but I guess if the owner of the parked car contacted them they would at least know what happened.

Of course you need to report it, there could be hundreds of pounds worth of damage done to the parked car!

Legoandloldolls · 07/10/2020 22:15

If it's a slow bumper bump witnessed, I normal ignore it but if there was bodywork or damage I would report to the landowner as the car owner is bound to phone and ask.if they have CCTV.

You could also go to the local police station and give them both reg's incase the owner of the hit car decides to report it .

Yes report to police.
And congratulations on EXCELLENT clear diagram.

I'd report it to the car park company and the police.

I witnessed an RV scrape and tear into the full length of a fairly new parked car, they stopped, looked out the side and quickly drove off. As I wasn't busy at the time I grabbed a coffee at the bakery beside me and waited for the car owner to get back with the RV's license plate, make and model in hand.
Thankfully the owner wasn't long (town main street) and I gave a statement to the police the following week. The RV was a hire vehicle and the repairs were paid in full by the RV hirers insurance. They had not reported it.

I think you should call 101 and report it on the non emergency police line (or report on their website, just Google 101 police report a crime). If it was my car that had been damaged I'd have been very grateful to you.
