Is this kids activity against the spirit of local lockdown or am I being over cautious?

There is a kids gymnastics club near me. I understand that organised sport is allowed and I have no issue with this at all.

Over half term they are running a halloween themed one-off day camp (on one day only) with games, activities like slime making, a party and disco etc. Its aimed at lower primary age. Its open to non-members of the gymnastics club and a few school parents are sending their children. They have said kids will be in bubbles of 15 so presumably no social distancing within the bubbles given the ages of the kids.

We are in a local lockdown area so no visitors allowed in house or garden, and kids are missing out on parties and playdates even with kids within their own bubble at school.

My initial reaction was surely this is against the spirit of the local lockdown and covid restrictions generally? I feel so sorry for the school, they have made such an effort to keep bubbles separate, kids are eating at their desks and not allowed to speak to others in other classes where my child has friends, and not able to mix year groups in wraparound care, again where my child has friends, to protect the bubble. I understand and agree with these actions. But they all seem a bit pointless when kids can theoretically go and mix with a different bubble of kids each day doing half term activities in enclosed spaces.

I understand if people are stuck for childcare but this isnt a gymnastics club that is running half term childcare with wraparound options etc, it's literally a one day thing during school hours (although someone could be stuck for childcare in school hours on one day I suppose).

I'm not sure if I'm so fatigued by the whole thing that I've lost sight of what's important or not. I'm not shielding or anything, although my parents are and we are not seeing them at the moment. I am just trying to do the right thing to stop the spread. I know that kids still need to do activities and have fun, and still take mine to swimming lessons but we have mostly been going on walks and avoiding the enclosed spaces where kids mix such as the few soft plays round us that have reopened.

Am I being over the top in thinking this halloween camp is a bad idea?

Really irresponsible thing to organise.

I can't see how it could remotely be in line with restrictions - even in non-lockdown areas.

My DD still isn't able to go to her Ranger meetings (90 mins every other week) and the Brownie pack she helps with has not gone back yet either. Again 90 minutes a week.

She is doing her dance classes - but they all have demarcated areas of the hall to dance in and everywhere is sanitised between classes.

I think I would be really tempted to report it to the Council for them to look into. Especially if my kids friends were likely to be going and then returning to school the next week.

I don't think you're being at all unreasonable, I think you're right that this isn't a good idea or safe. But gosh it's sad that we now live in a world where one day of kids' activities is a 'risk' and 'irresponsible', isn't it? Sad

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 07/10/2020 10:26

Yes it is sad. One of my kids is too young to remember pre-lockdown, it's weird to think this strange time is all she has ever known.

It's just bonkers what things are allowed and what are banned at the moment, I'm not sure if they're technically doing anything wrong.

This is irresponsible of the gymnastics club. I'd love to run some half term dance classes at my school but either would end up with very small groups (not financially viable) or would have to combine some of my current dance group bubbles which goes against my better judgement. We have worked so hard to get out of school activities reopened and it is both annoying for those who are sticking to the rigid guidelines and frustrating for those activity groups that have been unable to reopen when they see a group ignoring the rules
