Morris dancer phobia

This is honestly not a joke. I was talking to my friend earlier and she reminded me about her phobia of Morris dancers. It might sound ridiculous but she finds them very creepy. I'd forgotten, but she was telling me about a time she was in a pub and some came in, so she ran downstairs to hide from them, but one came jingling down the stairs to the loo. She described it as "like the scene in Jurassic park." We had a bit of a joke about it and I kept saying "jingle jingle jingle" and she found it very funny.

I ended up reading about them on Wikipedia, I hadn't known much about the tradition or that different types of Morris dancing are from different parts of the country.

I wanted to ask aibu (is my friend being unreasonable) to be freaked out by Morris dancers? Or is it quite reasonable in that it could be likened to clown phobias, which aren't that uncommon. Personally, I can't stand Ronald McDonald, I find him a bit sinister. Now I'm in a silly mood, I wanted to ask if anyone else has a phobia of slightly irrational or silly things.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions to help her overcome her fear of Morris dancers, they would be much appreciated.

@Smallereveryday

My favourite saying of all time is 'try EVERYTHING once except incest and MORRIS DANCING ' ... im a very rural dweller btw Whi has their very own 'troupe' in my Hamlet.. when DH joins I leave him...
Haven't RTFT although did read the early posts where Terry Pratchett is referenced. Quite possibly one of my favourite phrases he invented, regarding the relationship to fertility rituals and the jingly sticks, was 'sexual morrisment' - this just has to fit with Smaller's saying!

Fatima not rude at all. Grin

Dad met my Stepmum in a folk club so kept it up for a while. Mum didn't.

@FatimaMunchy

Did anyone else on this thread grow up in a Folk family? We went to endless Country Dances, watched our parents give displays, including at the Albert Hall, and I have a few memories of dances at Cecil Sharp House. We also went to Folk Camp every summer. Neither I, nor my siblings, carried this on as adults though.
Yep. My dad’s side we’re often booked at festivals so those were our summer holidays. Sidmouth, Whitby and Broadstairs were the big week long ones I remember. We also went to as festival at Butlins(!) a few times, as a kid that was way more fun than Ceilidhs in damp marquees and hours spent in pub gardens with a packet of crisps and a flat lemonade.

Origami we went to busk at Sidmouth once when we were at Folk Camp. Sidmouth was a big deal! We also used to go to one at Towersey which I think was in Oxfordshire.

DrCoconut · 08/10/2020 18:13

@ChildofCastor wow. This is a first for me, being the subject of someone's phobia. Obviously I'm the opposite and live historical costume. My attic would scare the shit out of you, full of costume items.

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 08/10/2020 18:44

Yes, Sidmouth was the big one. A night time spot in the main area show was the best you could get, the folk equivalent of playing the pyramid stage at Glastonbury. I remember going to Towersey too, I think that was a long weekend rather than a week.

FatimaMunchy · 08/10/2020 18:50

Origami yes I think you are right about Towersey.
We were definitely an add on at Sidmouth! You are right about it being the Glastonbury of the Folk world.

I was walking through town one evening when I heard a jingle of bells in the distance, gradually getting closer. All of a sudden there was a group of Morris men behind me. They danced and jangled and banged sticks and shouted for a bit, but then another group of Morris men in different clothes turned up and they started having some sort of Morris war.

Thought I was hallucinating.

West Side Morris Story!

@DrCoconut I'm so sorry, I'm sure you're lovely!

IDontLikeZombies · 08/10/2020 20:15

I don't think it's a weird phobia. I grew up believing that the Morris men were the last remnants of the druids and they would cast spells on you. I wonder if that's a common belief? I wonder if the hopping and cracking triggers some kind of folk memory of one tribe's druid cursing the other tribe?

@ErrolTheDragon
Morris dancers after the Haka would be amazing.
Would give England unfair advantage though as NZ would die laughing 😂

I'm not sure that I can approve in that case 🤔😂

longwayoff · 08/10/2020 21:43

I miss Terry Pratchett and his aptitude for coining a perfect phrase. A Morris tribute to Pratchett should be happening somewhere with a guest appearance by the Luggage.
