Kitchens: what will be the next trend?

We're going to have a new kitchen next year and, as we hope to sell up and move within the next couple of years, want to put in something that will be attractive to buyers rather than what we would choose for ourselves.

I think we have reached peak grey, so that will look dated by the time we sell, and doubt my ability to keep a high gloss finish free of fingermarks, so prefer a painted finish.

What does the MN hive mind think will be the next kitchen trend?

Kitchen is 16' x 10', and not very light, as the garden is higher than the house, iyswim.

I think darker colours for the whole house is going to be the next trend. Very Dark blues and greens. Obviously this won't suit everyones space. Highgloss is definitely out.

Notsurewhatsgoingon · 08/10/2020 12:54

But then I do have to point out that my house is colourful. My new kitchen might be light blue and orange. Not sure yet. I don't really think about the trends I just do what I like.

Graffitiqueen · 08/10/2020 13:01

I think black matt kitchens will be the next thing and also different worktops on the island and main run of units.

I love this kind of look: www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/704391197955526985/

Go with IKEA as its decent quality and easy to update the doors.
And add in all the interior fittings so there is loads of storage for everything. And somewhere for the bin/recycling .

Instead of wall tiles/backsplash, we have used oak cladding and then painted it. With neutral cupboards and a white, marble effect quartz worktop. We figured this was a really easy way to transform the kitchen according to trends/fashion. It’s currently painted f&B ‘down pipe’ (so quite dark), but if we were to sell we could just paint it to something more universally appealing. Saves being stuck with tiles!

longtompot · 08/10/2020 13:19

When we redo our kitchen in the next few years we will have non gloss white cupboards, wood effect worktops, white walls and sea glass green tiles. It's a north facing room, but does get the early evening sun. We will be putting a conservatory for our dining room leading from the kitchen so it will make it a bit darker which is why we are going for a light, but hopefully not boring or dated colour.

@DannyGlickWindowTapping

Just had mine done, went for mid grey, satin finish. Don't care that it may not be fashionable; it's a good base neutral, finger marks don't show, and it's easy to jazz up or tone down with accessories. Also have a dark room, so went for a "natural daylight" led panel light. It certainly does the job! It almost looks like a skylight / light well.
@DannyGlickWindowTapping do you mind showing a picture of the 'natural daylight led panel' it sounds just what I am looking for and I have never heard of them. Also, what brand is it? Thank you.
VinylDetective · 08/10/2020 13:28

Matt black would show every single finger mark. I don’t like cleaning enough to even consider that, quite apart from it dating in five minutes.

Horsemad · 08/10/2020 13:34

What's best for not showing finger marks? I've seen both matte & gloss and fingermarks showed on both.

NotMeNoNo · 08/10/2020 13:43

Natural wood or a laminate finish are best for not showing finger marks. Also have handle/knob rather than handle-less where you have to touch the door itself.

Horsemad · 08/10/2020 19:06

Thanks @NotMeNoNo, I'll have to start having a look around.

QuentinInQuarantino · 08/10/2020 20:34

In handleless you don't you the door though, there's a sort of hidden groove.

QuentinInQuarantino · 08/10/2020 20:36

@Venicelover it wasn't my kitchen you were asking about but I have one of those natural daylight led panels so here's a picture! Forgive the counter mess..

You don't touch the door? How do you open and close it? I suppose if it's sticky toddler fingerprints it doesn't matter whether there's a handle or not.

Like this, here are the drawers and a cupboard- there are doors where you push and open (you touch them and they get fingerprints) or ones like this with a hidden groove so presumably there are fingerprints in the groove but a)you dint see them and b) you can easily clean them because there's no handle edges to work around. My toddler makes quick work of fingerprint messing mirrors and walls but this satin (I think it isn't matte but not sure) finish doesn't show fingerprints. I'm really pleased with it but the whole design was based on minimal cleaning needs!

Shaker style, dark green units, crittal style doors, brass taps, cup and pull handles. That's at least what I'm seeing everywhere on Instagram at the moment. We are currently planning our kitchen and keeping it modern but neutral as it's likely to be like this for a while. We don't want it to date really quickly. We will be going shaker style though.

speakout · 09/10/2020 06:35

I would go light and bright, with some natural light coloured wood.
As the planet sinks into a mess I think there will be a trend into visuals that look less synthetic, less plastic.
So white painted wood, with some natural wood.
And If I am wrong it will still be neutral enough to add some colour pops.

Mosasaur · 09/10/2020 13:10

My new kitchen is dark matt grey with a leather finish matt black worktop, matt black floor and grey walls. Inspired by this ridiculously expensive Scandi Noir kitchen. Textures and matt finishes are increasingly popular. If we can’t sell the house I’ll probably paint the walls white and replace the cupboard doors, which is fairly cheap.

Horsemad · 09/10/2020 13:20

A leather finish worktop? Is that a lot of work to look after, @Mosasaur?

stoneysongs · 09/10/2020 13:56

I'm just getting my kitchen done at the moment and probably going for these birch doors and a white worktop. Not sure whether we'll end up with brass handles like in the picture or more likely recessed grab handles. Floor will be a dark colour but not black or grey.

minipie · 09/10/2020 14:10

Yes I think there’s going to be a lot of wood around, plywood especially, or a mixture of painted and wood. Flat fronted not shaker.

Colours but perhaps not the dark colours (dark blue and dark green are in now but will go out I think) more pale blue/pale green/pale yellow/pink.

Quartz will remain popular but maybe less marble look and more other types?

Off black and off white may be popular too. American kitchens are often white or off white and I think that may come over. So white and wood or off black and wood could be a popular combination.

minipie · 09/10/2020 14:11

Having said all that... you said you want a painted kitchen, well the joy of a painted kitchen is it can be repainted. So get what you like and then repaint to whatever is in fashion at the time you sell.

That’s been and gone, or is very current at least.
Next will be wood, especially plywood.

Horsemad · 09/10/2020 14:25

I quite like this style.

A lot of these suggestions aren’t ‘the next’ in thing 🤔

I think good quality, non fussy simple designs are the least likely to date.

Matt black will show dirt and fingerprints surely?

I have handleless maple cabinets with some high gloss cream cabinets. A bit 60s to match the house. An expensive kitchen but quite plain really. I love it and I don’t think it will date.

Matching the kitchen to the house seems sensible. A farmhouse kitchen looks perfect in a farmhouse...... etc

I think a lot of kitchens would look better in the top cupboards went right up to the ceiling. It looks neater and makes the kitchen look properly built in.
