Mirena coil regret. WIBU to have removed this early?

Would it be unreasonable of me to have the mirena coil removed after only three weeks?

I don't feel like I fully understood the side effects before I had it put in. The doctor told me I might have a week or so of spotting then irregular periods. So far I've been bleeding enough to be changing my pad every 2-4 hours and feel really tired and shitty. My iron levels were already really low and I feel like I had just got back on track with my iron tablets.

I'm in a fairly new relationship and we haven't had sex yet. As much as I would like to, and he's said the blood doesn't bother him, it makes me uncomfortable and I won't put myself in that position.

I've read up on this and looked at a couple of groups online and see that a lot of women bleed for months on end.

My doc has given me tranexamic acid to help with the bleeding but so far it hasn't worked.

Had anyone experienced similar? Would it be too hasty to have it removed this early when it could be life changing if I persevere?

Feeling a bit shit...

I think you need to have it removed. They are not good. There are healthier alternatives. It's a disgrace that they can put a foreign body inside you no problem but then make it difficult when you want it removed.

Like everyone else I think mine took a good couple of months to settle but the spotting was light and I had no pain. After that, I literally didn't have to think about periods and contraception for 4 and three quarters years until I realised I had to get a new one this month! I'm a little worried because at my smear last year the nurse couldn't see the strings, so not sure how they're going to replace it this time.

I would wait a bit longer to be honest. When I had my coil fitted I was told I might have irregular bleeding for up to 6 months. Didn't last that long, and it got very light after the initial month or so. Was life changing (in a good way) when it settled down.

OP, you know your body best! If this isn't feeling OK for you, then get it removed.

You are not unreasonable to want it out.

Every female gyne I have seen had put a lot of pressure on my to get a coil (age 42 family finished). They get very annoyed when I say I dont want it.
My sister is on her 2nd go at the coil as she had bad reactions to the first .She had bleeding for months, moods problems and constant hunger. She kept being told by her GP to give it more time and eventually he removed it after about 6 months. She left it for another couple of months and tried again. She is still having problems though not as bad.
Her SIL had a coil that moved position and she got pregnant.
I have heavy periods and mid cycle spotting that was investigated this week, I got a telling off for refusing the coil.

Well I spent yesterday in agony no bleeding but the period pain again, I have codeine now for this sort of thing today pain but at least not agony, I’ve had enough.

luca123 · 07/10/2020 16:09

Getting a coil was the best contraceptive choice I have ever made. I've had mine 2 years. I can't clearly remember the early days but know I did have some doubts to begin with. I have gone from really unpleasant heavy periods to none which has honestly been life changing for me. However if you really feel like something is not right I would at least get it checked out.

GeminiRising · 07/10/2020 16:38

I had one fitted and spotted heavily every day for a year until I insisted they take it out.

I was not prepared to spend every single day with a pad in and have blood every time we had sex.

They weren't happy with me wanting it out but they did it eventually.

LeSquigh · 07/10/2020 18:49

The Mirena coil is the work of the devil. Get it taken out.

I did not have the bleeding issues that you are having, in fact completely the opposite, my periods all but disappeared but my sex drive also completely disappeared (so there wasn't much point in using contraception!), I put on weight, felt depressed, basically had PMT the whole time it was in. The GP and nurse at the clinic where it was put in fucking INSISTED that it wasn't the coil causing it and I had to threaten to rip it out myself before they would take it out. And guess what, once they did things returned to normal, albeit slowly.

They say that the hormones are confined to your uterus and the general area so the side effects couldn't possibly be correct but they absolutely are NOT.

Nicklebox · 07/10/2020 19:24

I bled heavily continuously after having mine fitted, the doctor wanted me to keep it in. After three months i had a hemorrhage while out shopping my clothes were soaked through including my coat. I was sent to the hospital for a scan and there was no trace of the Mirena so it must of been expelled during the hemorrhage. I would get it taken out if i was you. I also had PMT symptoms while it was in although the doctor said that it was not possible.

Leylafrenchie · 07/10/2020 19:43

My friend had one and didn’t have any problems, except one day she was changing her tampax, and felt a string and didn’t realise what it was. She pulled it out and it was her coil 🤮

Thedot90 · 07/10/2020 19:45

I had a bad experience initially - not properly fitted, constant sharp pain during sex etc and spotting. Got it refitted after a couple of months and never looked back, absolutely love it - no periods for 3 years, had a second one fitted. Usually takes 3 months for contraception to settle in, so if you can bear it I would definitely persist.

gluteustothemaximus · 08/10/2020 21:02

There are two types of COIL- the mirena and the copper

Not from what I've been told/researched.

There is the Mirena IUD (releases copper) and the Mirena IUS (releases progestogen).

gluteustothemaximus · 08/10/2020 21:03

Have you got the IUD or IUS op?
