If you're washing both the windows and skirting boards would you wash the windows first or the skirting boards? One cloth, one bucket of water.

Currently having an argument with my mum over this!

I'd personally do the windows first and change the water/cloth but apparently I'm wrong and the 'proper' way to do it is skirting boards then glass...

Wibu?

@QuestionableMouse

Well it is my dad who's doing the physical work! (mum's disabled so can't do it herself)
Well then it’s his call.
QuestionableMouse · 06/10/2020 12:41

You'd think but in practice he just does exactly as mum asks.

Some people have some really odd ideas about cleaning. Like the mopping before sweeping thing- I mean ok if it was totally grotty then yeah mop it to get the worst, then sweep then mop again. But not as a standard practice surely?! I once worked for a woman who was absolutely insistent that you should ONLY hoover before dusting. She kept explaining it to me and I still couldn’t understand why you would hoover and then walk all over that freshly hoovered floor and knock dust/cobwebs/whatever onto it and then not hoover it again. The fit she had if she caught me hoovering after I’d dusted was INSANE and the reason I left.

You can’t clean windows properly using water and a cloth - they will always end up streaky.
You need to use a spray, usually vinegar-based, and a micro fibre cloth or kitchen roll.

movingonup20 · 06/10/2020 12:57

Windows (glass) then frames (plastic) then skirting but change water and rinse cloth at some point, it's not done regularly since I got rid of our cleaner when I moved so a bit icky

VinylDetective · 06/10/2020 12:58

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace

I can't think of any good reason to clean either the windows or the skirting boards. My life clock is ticking. I have stuff to do Grin
The only really good reason is that you’re putting your house on the market. Or leaving a rental.
FudgeBrownie2019 · 06/10/2020 12:59

The person doing the cleaning gets to dictate how the cleaning gets done. The person watching gets to smile and think to themselves "that's not what I'd have done" then say thank you.

Graciebobcat · 06/10/2020 13:00

I'd use window and glass cleaner with kitchen roll to clean the windows and a dot of disinfectant on a damp cloth to clean the skirting boards, so it wouldn't matter which way round I did them.

Stefoscope · 06/10/2020 13:03

My first hand experience of cleaning windows and skirting boards in the same day is fairly limited. I can't think of a time I've done both at once, but I'd been inclined to say windows first. In your situation, I'd stay quiet and be more than happy to let your Dad crack on with it under your Mum's supervision, comment on what a great job he did, and be relieved it's one less cleaning job I potentially have to do!

Howlooseisyourgoose · 06/10/2020 13:06

My windows get dirtier than the skirting boards so I would do skirting boards first.

I’d to glass with newspaper anyway.

steppemum · 06/10/2020 13:15

Can't get my head around putting these too jobs together.

I am not the world's greatest cleaner, but.
Skirting boards - do it at the same time as other things inside that don't get done regularly, like tops of doorways, picture frames, banisters, radiators etc. Wet cloth, high up things first and work your way down.

Windows - cloth and spray, done as it's own job as nothing else uses same spray. (well, mirrors and picture glass if you must) As this only happens once a year in my house, it is a job in its own right.

DeciduousPerennial · 06/10/2020 13:34

Well, if by some miracle I woke in alternate universe and somehow found myself a) washing both windows and skirtings at the same time, and b) using the same bucket and cloth then I’d do the windows first. Obviously. Who wants mucky water used on glass?

Family1st2020 · 06/10/2020 13:35

Glass 1st. Then skirtings.
Different cloths and water regularly changed.

FloraButterCookie · 06/10/2020 13:36

Glass first

lentilsforlunch · 06/10/2020 13:40

Is this because of dust from the skirting boards sticking to the wet glass?

I have never cleaned skirting boards only an occasional hoover of the top

I quite like this thread though it makes a change from the other apocalyptic ones

AgreeableEagle · 06/10/2020 13:44

Two reasons for windows first:

  1. Top to bottom would be the idea, because of the splashing;
  1. Always clean glass with the cleanest water - otherwise it's like leaving washing your wine glass until after you've washed out your lasagna dish!

Your parents need to invest in a window vac - no streaks!

cheeseychovolate · 06/10/2020 13:44

Windows then skirting board

GlamGiraffe · 06/10/2020 13:46

Glass with vinegar and washing up liquid in water., i use a vloth to was and glass cloth(s) to dry.
New water for window frames, now cloth if other one dirty.
Then skirting boards, only change the water if its dirty.
Also dust it all first, better still use hoover attachment.
Always clean from top to bottom as dust distubed drops.

TheHighestSardine · 06/10/2020 14:11

She's triply wrong.

  1. Glass first always
  2. Not with soapy water, that's mad
  3. If mad enough to use soapy water, change the water if it's at all dirty before moving on to other things.

Thankfully I have my own house so can clean things as I like. 😂😂😂

I do my windows with just a microfiber cloth. They come up lovely and no messing about.
