DS aged 17 is at college doing engineering btec. He was excited about starting it but is a bit despondent as they are only doing 2 days per fortnight as the classes are being split for COVID

he has time on his hands and wants a job

he has applied for loads and where he has applied on lone has been into the shops to follow up his application

he has had no responses and is feeling pretty crap

I dont know how to help him - any ideas for how to get a job when you havent had one and have no experience - where are we going wrong. ?

DS17 found his job at JD Sports as they advertised online, in the run up to Xmas many shops are looking to take on extra staff. There are so many students looking for pt work though, and this year is extra difficult. Another of his friends works in Dominoes Pizzas but most haven't found anything either.

When I needed care experience to do my Nursing degree I literally walked into my local care home which was run by a 'group' (like Colten Care) with a CV showing my GCSEs & a smart outfit on & keen attitude but no relevant experience.
The manager hired me on the spot & sent me for training!

I also got a job in Sainsbury in the checkout as a teen with no prior work experience, they were a new store hiring locals.

I also recommend going to an employment agency where walking in with GCSES & a smart outfit & good attitude could get him some good temporary contracts eg factory work which pays well.
I did a lot of temporary work before I went into Nursing.

Have you tried fast food restaurants?

My DD is working part-time in a nice chain restaurant while at uni and that's worked out well for her.

DS has only one day in college due to covid, with the rest working from home, a day off college during the week, and all weekend free.

The problem is, so does every other teenager in our area. Our local FB community group has at least 20 posts a day asking does anyone know of any jobs for teenagers available.

He's walking the dog every day for us, that's saved us £15 a day so we are giving him £30 a week for that. Which is enough for someone with zero outgoings at the moment Grin.

My DC is in the same situation OP. While I would like for her to have a job I am also mindful that job = more exposure to general public which right now could potentially have her in isolation for 14 days impacting her education.

My niece is 16 and in her first year of A levels and has just started working at McDonalds part time.

My own 17yr old ds said he hasn’t got time for a job. He is struggling with his A level work though and Covid in general.

I walked around pubs with CVs for my jobs when I was a teen
