LAPLAND AIBU??

MIL has booked to take children to lapland as a suprise however she has booked it on a school day (its a friday) as she said the weekend dates were too expensive. AIBU to tell her I'm not comfortable with this? Are they likely to be turned away at the door or questioned as to why they are not at school by lapland staff?

If they're young enough for the trip to be suitable, then 1 day out of school in the run up to Christmas isn't going to matter, and I say that as someone who is normally hugely against term-time holidays.

My major concern would actually be the not-that-small risk that they won't be able to go because of either a popped bubble at school or a contact or symptoms in the household and no negative test in time. It's a lot of money to throw away if they can't travel because they're having to self-isolate, and I'd be making very sure Grandma understands that risk, and that she won't be able to 'just take them anyway... I'll keep them away from everyone else, I promise....'

@justanotherneighinparadise

I would imagine the OP is talking about Lapland Uk. If it was Lapland abroad that would be a holiday surely, not a one day trip.
You can do one-day trips to Lapland in Finland. You fly out at about 4 am, spend the day with very tired and over-excited children, then arrive back at about 10 pm. All for about a grand each.

Ideal for those who enjoy the company of crabby children and who hate the environment.

It's awesome. And yes, you get a small booking window.

Let them go!!! Of course they won't be interrogated at the door Grin

In fact they'll be met by elves and given their jingles and they'll have an amazing time. It's so special, by far the best UK experience there is

Thankyou all. Yes I do realise she has been incredibly generous and I have thanked her profusely I was just worried about it being a school day but I feel a lot better after reading your comments. Thanks guys 😊

Bloody hell, I just had a look and it's extortionate! It better be the real Father Christmas for that price!

Let them go, but tell school the truth. We had a little boy have a Friday off once to go to Lapland UK. His parents rang in sick but the little boy had told his friends (in all seriousness) that he was off to Lapland to become an elf. When his name was called out in the register, another boy put his hand up and announced that “X us gone to be an elf” 😂😂😂. Not that there were any consequences except that it gave us a good laugh!

Take them out. We have booked to go to Lapland (Finland) in December and if by any small miracle it goes ahead they'll be out for 3 days. Obviously booked pre-fucking-covid.

I've tried to book for this year but there wasn't any availability, if it doesn't go ahead you'll be able to change to next year. I've booked lapland uk today for my dd and we absolutely can't wait!

Tourist attractions aren’t attendance officers. They have a vested interest in you being there, why would they care you’re skiving school for the pleasure??

Agree the far bigger problem is the likelihood of to having to self isolate due to cases or (hopefully not!) one of you being ill, or of further tightening of restrictions. Welsh areas in local lockdown forbid travel outside the county, if this is brought in elsewhere as well it may cause problems.

The people who fly to another country and back in a day are absolutely ridiculous, regardless of the financial cost, think about the environmental impact of that! Just so you can have a day if overtired overwrought children ( or cheap fags in the case of one PP).

Vgbeat · 05/10/2020 23:34

It's one day. Let them go and enjoy it. I'm a teacher and I wouldn't begrudge them going. You won't get fined for one day and after a crap year kids need as much joy as possible.

NorfolkEnchance · 06/10/2020 20:02

I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time! It looks brilliant. Tui seem confident it's going ahead, I, however, am not.

Op, if your Mil is known for trampling on barriers, being rude etc then maybe get upset...

However, I can't stand mine and even I would be grateful for this. Are you you invited too?.. It's eye wateringly expensive...

It's like interactive immersive theatre.. So it's like a show but your in it. The attention to detail is incredible. It's amazing, probably the best father Christmas experience in the UK...

It really is beautiful and magical.

They build their own sets, rooms etc so all this will be done with covid and sd fully in mind. They can be flexible.

I'd be extremely grateful, it's a wonderful experience and yes booking is really fast and tough, it was the last booking window today. After the awful year we have had it will be a wonderful treat. Enjoy!!

Yy cocomarine, the sickly sweet elves faces suddenly cloud over and turn to vicious sprites, questioning small children and probing questions..
