To ask whether ds should go for Newcastle, Manchester or Birmingham for medicine?

Hi, ds’ school deadline for early entry UCAS forms tomorrow and he’s stuck on his last medicine option. He thinks the birmgham course may be a bit too traditional but it’s still in the mix- mainly between Manchester and Newcastle. Does anyone have any experience of these?

Same reason when you go to uni they ask what A levels you did, when you go to secondary they ask what primary. Its just small talk, might have mutual friends/acquaintances @Squiffany

AnnaMagnani · 05/10/2020 19:34

I agree with @DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon it's small talk. Nobody has given a shit where I trained since I trained there.

I've moved around the country a lot and can confirm that most people really don't. Bigger priorities in medicine are trying to get in the same deanery as your partner, not having a rotation where you are travelling the length and breadth of Britain and trying to avoid total wankers.

StandardPoodle · 05/10/2020 19:41

Newcastle.

Haffdonga · 05/10/2020 19:52

As mum of a medic and of a Manchester student I'd say Newcastle for medicine. How does your ds feel about very pbl?

FifteenFluffyBunnies · 05/10/2020 20:02

Newcastle. It might seem far but it’s really not as traveling is easy straight up and down the East Coast Main Line

Lucywho · 05/10/2020 20:13

Yes his head is at Newcastle while heart in Manchester so I think he’s waiting for something to tip the balance

Both are good can he put a first and second choice? I know a few yearws ago Manchester got a bit of a violent reputation with muggings aimed at students but tbh you can get mugged anywhere.

Oohmegooliebird · 05/10/2020 20:21

All well respected universities. As others have said he should choose the city/location he prefers.

Agree that no one really cares where you went to medical school. I don't know where most of my colleagues trained. I think if my child were applying I might advise them against one of the newer med schools, but to be truthful I have no real justification for this.

NellyJames · 05/10/2020 20:27

Is he likely to get an interview at all 3 of those? Has he checked GCSE requirements.
Did he do Ukat or BMAT? Do any of the 3 require either of those? Does this tip the balance? Can he spend a couple of hours on The Student Room to help him narrow it down?

Lucywho · 05/10/2020 20:29

nellyjames He really is in the very fortunate position that he’d be set to get an interview at any of these

@Lucywho, well I’m that case he should have another quick look online at course content and structure and decide which of those suits him best. All 3 will be w similar living experience in terms of city living. If you’re Londoners, obviously Newcastle is much further away. Easy to get home from Birmingham and not much further to Manchester. We live near Manchester and we’re from Herts. I could get home to Herts quicker than I could get to Newcastle so it’s quite a bit further. In terms of course, Some will have far earlier patient exposure than others. Some with be drier with more top heavy theory. There’s lots if comparisons online and again TSR will have quite a few threads on this.
@Squiffany honestly no one really cares where you did your medical degree once you start as a doctor. There are the usual discussions about different medical schools but it really makes no difference beyond that.
I do not have to foggiest idea where most of my colleagues went!
This. It really doesn't matter.

Medical and Dentistry courses are highly respected at Newcastle. It's a vivid, friendly city with wonderful architecture and culture, a great arts scene, the coast on your doorstep and the Northumbrian Countryside on your doorstep... Bliss! The RVI and Freeman Hospital are leading hospitals in the country.
