To struggle to find something to talk about at dinner?

Especially during Covid, especially on a rainy Sunday? My DH, my DC and I sat around the table masticating as I desperately tried to think of something to say. We had very little to report on our days--I ironed and watched a film, DC (16) was on the computer doing homework and gaming, and DH did a bit of work. I'd love to live in a family with lots of chat and good-natured teasing! What does everyone talk about? Suggestions welcomed.

My DS 8 is obsessed with Minecraft so monologues about it. In an effort to combat this I created a jar of conversation starters that I ask him to choose from. Things like: if you had a superpower, what would it be? If you could choose anyone from history to be your best friend, who and why? Etc. Google conversation starters and there’s loads of good ideas. It’s been pretty interesting and fun.

Family of 5 here. All teens + parents. We play 20 questions/Who Am I. So 20 questions to guess the person that the player is thinking of. We pick all sorts of people and surprisingly the kids guess the history ones best. Also do family members and cartoon characters. Creates a giggle and bit of conversation.

This is why you should always eat in front of the tv.

Grab a tray and sit next to me on the couch, Lilybet1980

All these stimulating conversations you're all having at the table, how does that work? If your DD asks you "mum - what is Roe-v-Wade?" just as you've taken a mouthful of food, does she wait for your reply whilst you chew and swallow or do you answer with a mouthful like Americans do on TV shoes?

DH isn’t very well at the moment so food on a tray in the lounge... we’ve become quite competitive at The Chase. On a couple of occasions when dinner has been quite late we’ve done mastermind but that entails me keeping scores and my food invariably gets cold 😂😂😂 He cannot be trusted to tally properly

We really try hard not to talk about COVID!

We talk about anything and everything at mealtimes, including toilet habits, sex and telling sick jokes.
No different to any other time really.

Great thread OP! I insist on family dinner round the table after DS gets home from nursery, and I want to model good conversation for him, but with us WFH there’s not a lot to say after we’ve asked DS about his day. Following with interest!
