Apply for a new job

Currently on mat leave and due back in the new year. I don’t love my job but I like it, it’s stressful fast paced and I have to work evenings to try and keep on top of the work load. I hate that I have to work 4 days and quite long days and feel like I miss out with the kids.

There is an opportunity that’s a bit of a drive but only 16 hrs term time which means I will get the school holidays off (currently one child at school and one will be in nursery). It would be working in a school as a clerk which isn’t as challenging but might work better (providing the 16hrs arent split across 5 days as that would be a nightmare with childcare costs)

The new job would be 1/4 of my current salary and I think we could just about manage it.

I will however have to pay back my enhanced mat pay and my OH isn’t happy about that idea as we are talking thousands.

Should I go for it as I might not even be offered the job or wait and do my time in my current job and see if anything comes up in a year or two?

No I wouldn’t. You have to think about your future also.

That's a big drop in pay especially you think you could only just about manage it and considering you'd have to pay back your current job. I wouldn't do it.

If it’s a Clerk to the Governors it will probably be some early mornings and late evenings as you’ll have to attend committees and take minutes.

Probably not split across 5 days but might not be regular dats if that makes sense?

I suspect that you might find it boring - it’s essentially note taking and minute typing and filing.

Depends. How much of what you earn now is spent on childcare? After school, holidays, sick days etc? holiday clubs and such?

How long do you need to return to work to keep the maternity pay? Could you negotiate less hours? Or term time?

Surely halving you’re days would keep your hourly salary?

I have requested parttime at my current job but already been told it’s unlikely so I think I will have to return 4 days. No chance of term time only.

Total childcare bill is about 1k a month but even if I did the new job I think I would drop that in salary and still need to pay for nursery some days.

Maybe it’s not such a great idea but I think I got a bit carried away thinking of the school holiday and hours.
