To ask if anyone can help calculate universal credit entitlement?

Just that really.. I've finally found the backbone to tell 'D'p I'm leaving and I'm reslly struggling to work put how much I'll get.

I'm a 'mature student' with 2 year old DD, dont work at the moment as I'm going a full time degree. I cant find a solid estimate of how much extra I'll get in UC credit at all, depending on the calculator or method I use the amount I need to budget within per month ranges from £1100 to £1600 a month which is obviously a big difference when it comes to trying to budget for rent and bills. Once I add up my maintenance loan and grant I have around £10890 per year but I just cant work out how much UC credit will top up how much I have.
I've called UC credit who weren't much help and said they couldnt tell me, I'd have to apply and find out. Does anyone have any experience of being a student on universal credit who can help?

One of them has created a website with advice on how to work out your payments. www.uceplus.co.uk/

Don’t forget you’ll get child benefit in top as well.

Professionallytorn · 03/10/2020 20:58

It will depend on the components of / how your student finance award is worked out. See www.gov.uk/guidance/universal-credit-and-students

DueNumberTwo · 03/10/2020 21:02

Try the calculator on the 'entitled to' website

LouLouLoupee · 03/10/2020 21:08

I’m a mature student receiving UC as DH became to ill to work, in Scotland so may be differences.
Your entitlement will the full amount of the elements you are entitled to. Eg ‘single person allowance’, ‘child allowance’ etc. What changes the amount you receive is how much other income you have. Student loan is counted as ‘other income’ and taken off £ for £. Most bursary’s are included in this, apart from childcare and travel specific ones.

IME no one at UC has a clue about students, I never get a question answered easily.

Tyrannynormus · 03/10/2020 21:14

I dont think entitled to is very accurate, it does say it's not meant for students. If I input how much I have per month from my student loan as if that was my income from working it reckons I'll get an additional £1000 a month, leaving me with £2000 a month which seems highly unlikely Hmm

www.uceplus.co.uk/student.html

Yes this website tells you accurately how to do it. You’ll need your official course start and end dates too

Northernsoullover · 03/10/2020 21:19

Do you get any grants? I think they disregard the grant but deduct the loan.

CornishTiger · 03/10/2020 21:20

Yes this is correct! It’s not the easiest to calculate and people shy away from learning it. Was same when it was income support.

CornishTiger · 03/10/2020 21:21

You can’t put in your student income as work income on the calculators as you’ll get a work allowance deducted hence the higher than expected figures.

Use the calculator I and another poster linked.

Tyrannynormus · 03/10/2020 21:31

I think using the UCE website calculations my full entitlement would be £1425, then minus off my student loan?

What is you rent and how does it compare to your local housing allowance. How old are children

Exactly what student finance do you get and also course start and end dates

Tyrannynormus · 03/10/2020 23:03

21st September to the 9th of july.
My rent is roughly in line with the LHA (I think it's about £2.00 less). I have an almost 2 year old.

I get £1290 a year adult dependant grant and £9698 maintenance loan.

OP posts:
CornishTiger · 04/10/2020 06:50

So how much is your rent. You’ll you need to add that on to this basic amount.

Standard allowance is Single and under 25 £342.72 or Single and 25 or over £409.89

Child £235.83

CornishTiger · 04/10/2020 06:57

If you claim before 20th October you’ll have 10 assessment periods your student income will be taking into account for.

Your maintenance loan is higher than the normal maintenance loan. Is any of that Parent learning allowance. Or special support grant or child dependent grant?

When are you telling student finance about your separation. You need your adult dependent grant removed otherwise that will be taken into account too.

Do not delay separation because of finances. You will have enough to get by. Don’t forget uni hardships funds if needed.

Tyrannynormus · 04/10/2020 07:52

That's really handy to know CornishTiger, I'll claim ASAP.
I was hoping to sort finances out over this next week, moving out the sooner the better really.

Join universal credit essentials Facebook group, they can help you work out what your deduction for student finance will be, they’re actually now a registered charity and the admin are fantastic and really know their stuff.

AmIACowBag · 04/10/2020 14:03

My friends a mature student which makes her not entitled to UC as her loan was classed as enough for her to live on without needing help.

AmIACowBag · 04/10/2020 14:04

And she has 1 child so only gets child benefit
