To want to park on my own drive!

We live at the end of a new build cul-de-sac. The road goes up to the end of our house and then stops but it’s just long enough to allow us to reverse into our drive. Our neighbours house is across from ours but their drive is behind their house. Our neighbours regularly have visitors who park at the end of the road, meaning that we can’t reverse onto our drive. Once we’re on, if the car is still there when we need to leave, it’s extremely difficult to get off as we then have to reverse down the street. They also sometimes park further down the road, meaning that we can’t get onto the drive at all as the road isn’t wide enough. Today, I nipped out in the pouring rain for only around 15 mins to get some cash out and when I got home, a car was parked directly across our drive. I had to get out in the rain and knock on the door to ask them to move. There was nowhere else that I could have parked.

Never mind the fact that they shouldn’t actually have had visitors because we’re in a local lockdown area, AIBU to think this is really thoughtless?

I’ve attached a (not to scale picture) as required by MN.

Their house is blue/ purple and ours is green/ yellow. The light blue box is where their visitors usually park.

I should add, other than this, they’re really nice people so I don’t understand why they’re so inconsiderate on this!

Can you forward drive onto your drive if someone's parked there?
The trouble with new build estates is that space is at a premium.

Veterinari · 03/10/2020 18:59

Put a sign up saying:

Space required for turning. Please don't park here

LadyCatStark · 03/10/2020 19:01

We can if they park where the blue car on my picture is but not when they park further down as there isn’t room for us to get past. It makes it really difficult to reverse out though as we can’t turn round until the road gets wider. There’s also loads of children playing out so reversing is quite dangerous.

A lot of new build estates have poorly thought out parking provision imo, that would annoy me too.

Taylrse · 03/10/2020 19:23

Yanbu! I used to live in a little close a few years ago. It had one single lane road going down that stopped at the end where the last house was.
(Looked just like your diagram)

The neighbours opposite didn't have a drive and also would have guests over who would literally park in the road blocking 4 houses in! It was so annoying to constantly have to ask them to move their cars so I could get in and out.

Some mornings I would leave at 5am and have to knock and wake them up to move their car or guests cars Grin

Unfortunately the problem never got sorted as these neighbours would not listen to anyone. I moved house in the end anyway as the house I was renting was going up for sale.

LadyCatStark · 03/10/2020 19:31

Wow @Taylrse that would be really annoying!

It’s actually one of the better new build estates for parking to be fair as the houses are quite big, detached and well spaced out with double drives. But not everyone chooses to park on their drives which leaves even less space for visitors. I just can’t get my head around the thinking of someone who would park directly across someone’s drive though!

YABU by including the diagram in your first post and denying us all the joy of demanding a diagram!

But not about the parking. Can you talk to the neighbors?

TableFlowerss · 03/10/2020 19:48

Why’s the road so narrow that two cares can’t pass? Surely is got two lanes?

CtrlU · 03/10/2020 19:51

That’s very annoying.

Your not being unreasonable for wanting to park on your own drive.

LadyCatStark · 03/10/2020 19:51

@TableFlowerss the road narrows out at the end as is goes past the neighbours house. So IABU in that sense because my diagram doesn’t reflect that (first MN diagram fail!).

@HannaYeah we do need to talk to them about it but I have terrible social anxiety and they’re really nice other than this so I’m terrified of getting on the wrong side of them!

I'm not sure why you can't reverse onto your drive. But nonetheless it does seem irritating.

BananaLlamaConCalma · 03/10/2020 19:58

Can you not knock on and ask them? They probably don't realise.

movingonup20 · 03/10/2020 19:59

Sympathies,I have similar issues in that I cannot get onto the drive frequently if cars are parked opposite. Dp doesn't even try because his is bigger and he get trapped (I can get out if I reverse on but only possible if at least I of 2 neighbours isn't home). It's the stupid design of the estate

LadyCatStark · 03/10/2020 20:00

Updated diagram to reflect narrowing of the road and show where today’s car was parked.

@CountTessa because the only way to reverse onto the drive is to go past the drive into the space where the first blue car was parked and then reverse into the drive. It’s not a wide road at all.

I'd go round and say "there seems to be some arsehole parking at the end of the road - we can't get out - are you having the same issue? I know it's not you as we obviously can't have visitors at the moment, but do you think we should contact the council"

We have an issue too on our road and I've found speaking to people on a "we're all in this together" way is having an effect. Although it's their visitors/contractors/delivery people that are blocking the road.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 03/10/2020 20:01

Could you use their drive to turn to allow you to reverse in? If they say anything you can say it's because their guests have blocked the road

LadyCatStark · 03/10/2020 20:01

Don’t think diagram attached!

Can you park behind them without blocking anyone from other properties?

LadyCatStark · 03/10/2020 20:02

@DontTouchTheMoustache no because their own cars are on it!

OP posts:
LadyCatStark · 03/10/2020 20:03

@Aroundtheworldin80moves yes that was DH’s suggestion and I’m going to do it next time 😂

Bargebill19 · 03/10/2020 20:03

Argh!!! That would so give me the rage. I’m fuming on your behalf.
Me being me would hire a lorry and block the round off and sweetly say “oh dear, can’t move it as no tacho hours left, sooooo annoying when you can’t park but I just didn’t think” wave and bugger off back to bed.

But yes, you need to speak to them and explain and point out where they can park that causes less problems.

CountTessa · 03/10/2020 20:14

I take it back! Impossible. I like the suggestion of going round and saying 'somebody seems to be breaking the rules, shall we notify the council?'
