Has anyone claimed tax relief for mileage at work? Please help!

Posting for traffic (sorry wasn’t sure which topic this would come under anyway).

My mind for some reason isn’t able to function when it comes to this sort of stuff. Basically, I do a lot of miles for work in my own car, anywhere between 1000 & 2000 a month. My employer pays 25p a mile. I was told when I started at the beginning of the year that I could claim the rest from HMRC at the end of the year. Since it’s getting closer now I decided to have a look online and my brain has turned into mush. It saids I need receipts to show my mileage which I don’t have, unless they mean timesheets (?) in which case I do.

Has anyone done this before?
How does it work and is it fairly straight forward?
Is it even worth doing? (My employer seems to think so as he’s suggested it quite a few times)
If I put a claim in, do I do it at the end of December or beginning of January?

Ahhh please help! I am useless when it comes to HMRC. I would ask my employer but he’s pretty much busy all the time. If it means I get a small percentage of money back then that would be a huge help as the 25p just about covers my fuel let alone any wear and tear.

Thank you 😊

Yes it’s easy to do. www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/vehicles-you-use-for-work

Thanks @emma123456 , I've already had a look at this and that's why my brain has turned into mush a bit 🙈

Your employer is being very stingy as they could pay up to 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter.

You need to keep an accurate mileage log. HMRC don’t pay the difference between the 45p and the 25p you get tax relief on that amount (probably 20% if you are a basic rate taxpayer)

ItWasntMyFault · 03/10/2020 17:46

It's very easy - I complete the form and have never been asked for proof but could provide my payslips if needed.

I just do it for a complete tax year which means you wouldn’t claim it until April next year.

It’s really easy as long as you’ve kept mileage logs

And as a previous post you said you don’t get the difference between the 25p in the 45p you get the tax relief

public-online.hmrc.gov.uk/lc/content/xfaforms/profiles/forms.html?contentRoot=repository:/Applications/PersonalTax_A/1.0/P87_20189&template=P87.xdp

This is the form. Work out how many miles you have travelled for work in this tax year eg

If you have done 10,000 miles and your employer has paid you 25p per mile, you can claim tax relief on the difference between the Govt rate and what your employer paid you which in this example is 20p per business mile. If you pay tax at 20% you can claim 20p x business mileage(to a max of 10,000 miles) x 20%. The claim is made for each tax year so for
6/4/19 to 5/4/20 etc. Does that make sense?

moneyonmyminddd · 03/10/2020 17:50

Thanks everyone. I have all my miles documented so that's fine.

@Comefromaway I think because he thinks I'll get money back from HMRC he shouldn't have to pay 45p a mile.

I'm a basic tax payer, don't earn big bucks unfortunately Grin

Would it be okay if I put the claim in at the end of the year or should I wait until April? I started my job in December 19.

You can claim Dec-19 to Mar-20 now as that’s one tax period, then claim Apr-20 to Mar-21 for the next tax year.

It is really easy, I’ve never been asked for receipts either.

emma123456 · 03/10/2020 18:02

Claim Dec to 5/4/20 now and then claim for 6/4/20-5/4/21 next year.

moneyonmyminddd · 03/10/2020 18:32

Okay fab! I will hold off until March and do it then. Thanks so much again everyone I appreciate it Smile
