Synchronised swimming for boys

JoanFit · 03/10/2020 15:52

My son is 10 and a good swimmer. When were at the swimming pool we stayed after his lesson to watch the synchronised swimming club hold their practice.
He asked me he would like to learn synchronised swimming.

I'm not sure. Would you encourage a boy to take synchronised swimming classes?

Why ever not?
Mine did ballet.

DramaAlpaca · 03/10/2020 15:55

I don't see why not.

Rewis · 03/10/2020 15:57

Why not. Assuming the club takes boys. A few years ago the international organisation introduced mixed events so I can see it becoming morr popular.

SimonJT · 03/10/2020 15:59

Why not? Its important that children enjoy their hobbies/extra classes.

OwlBeThere · 03/10/2020 15:59

Why not?!

HandfulofDust · 03/10/2020 16:00

Of course he should try it if he's interested. Great exercise for him, great fir balance and strength.

liveitwell · 03/10/2020 16:05

Of course! What great exercise and to learn to dance and perform like that in the water - it's amazing. Id LOVE my boys to do that when they're older if they'd like to.

YABU for questioning it! The skies the limit, don't restrict him based on your own views on what boys 'should and shouldn't do'

Sunbird24 · 03/10/2020 16:09

OP, watch Swimming With Men...

NicholasTopliss · 03/10/2020 16:09

Yes. Why not? Synchro is a great sport and requires a lot of training, strength and stamina. He would need to find a mixed club, or at least a club that would be happy to take him, but mixed synchro is becoming more popular now. IMO it is much more challenging and interesting than swimming up and down.
It can be expensive though.
Talk to the people running your local club.

DancingGiraffes · 03/10/2020 16:14

DD is a member of a synchronised swimming club. Our head coach would love some boys to be involved. DD competes at regional competitions and the bigger clubs usually have a boy in their squad. If he wants to try it, I’m sure your local club would love to have him.

Cocomarine · 03/10/2020 16:26

No, I wouldn’t encourage a boy. He might catch gay.
If that sounds ridiculous... then you have your answer?!
Why would you not encourage him?

daretodenim · 03/10/2020 16:29

I'd only suggest it if he's willing to become super fit and strong, with great stamina and flexibility. It's not for wimps. 😉

JoanFit · 03/10/2020 16:29

Would the girls tease him?

Would he be teased by boys?

OP posts:
BoingBoingyBoing · 03/10/2020 16:30

Careful, he might catch the gay.

june2007 · 03/10/2020 16:34

I think the main issue is your obvious sexists attitude.

AlexaShutUp · 03/10/2020 16:37

Oh dear. How sad that people are still so influenced by these outdated stereotypes. Of course you should let him do it, if he is interested.

And yy to watching Swimming with Men.

Bickles · 03/10/2020 16:47

Synchro is really hard work - the most difficult swimming discipline. It builds strength, you need to be very supple and be able to hold your breath for ages!
Yes it would be great for a boy but he’ll be in a minority I would think. If he minds that maybe diving?

Heyahun · 03/10/2020 17:05

Omg seriously? Sounds like an amazing thing to learn! Who cares what anyone else thinks

LynetteScavo · 03/10/2020 18:05

I would definitely encourage my son to do this!

SionnachRua · 03/10/2020 18:08

Why not? I'd encourage a boy into dance, synchronised swimming, cooking classes etc. Just as I'd encourage a girl into football, woodworking or any traditionally male pursuit. If that's what they are interested in let them at it.

MsEllany · 03/10/2020 18:12

People are being ridiculous. You can worry that your child might be teased or picked on for doing an unusual hobby without thinking they might ‘catch the gay’ Hmm.

Having said that - I would absolutely encourage this. If he thinks a friend might tease he only needs to mention it’s a swimming club.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 03/10/2020 18:23

We went to the European championships in Glasgow, this mixed pair were amazing.

There are other water sports, waterpolo underwater hockey, scuba if it just the water he likes plus diving and club swimming. There aren't many boys in synchro but doesn't mean he can't try it.

nosswith · 03/10/2020 18:24

Why not?

Codexdivinchi · 03/10/2020 18:28

I love it!! I was a swimming teacher for many years and I wished I’d done it.

If he wanted to do I’d ask the group if he could join. It’s amazing!

Nottherealslimshady · 03/10/2020 18:33

Careful, he might catch the gay
GrinGrinGrin

Jesus OP stop being ridiculous, of course boys can do synchronised swimming.
