to not want another car

Had current car for 15 years and after sitting unused since Feb due to WFH , etc, booked car in to investigate warning light that has appeared before MOT. The garage has advised of £1000+ worth of work . i have decided to completely get rid and not get another , at least for the time being.
DP who doesn't drive is opposed to this idea so i said if you want a car , you can learn to drive. Car mostly used to go shopping with occasional days away, etc. AIBU?

If you hardly use it you might be as well getting shot if it and saving all the running costs and insurance. Work out how much it costs per year and divide into weeks and see if it’s horrific or worth it after all!

You could instead consider joining a car club or something as it isn’t as dear as a hire car but you can have transport when you need it. They do vans too.

Shopping can be bought on line or even a main shop on line any top ups from the local shop on foot.

It can be a pain when you are used to having a car to do without, but if you’ve not really used it in ages...!

We haven't owned a car for about 8 years and even with two small children we've never really missed it. Occasionally we hire one or take taxis but the rest of the time public transport is fine. Our outgoings are minimal and we can choose whether we spend money on transport, rather than paying to run a car whether we're using it or not. Most cars are stationary 90% of the time, it just didn't make sense for us to own one.

Get shot, I have a car but can't actually drive at the moment (no license i'm still learning) and it's depressing how expensive it is to insure, tax and fuel. If you live somewhere with good transport links then is a car really necessary? Perhaps you can hire a car if you want to go away for the weekend etc. My grandmother does this, she doesn't go far other than on holidays to the airport.

Did DP pay towards the car? If so, YABU - it's not that easy just to tell someone to pass their test. If not, then YANBU at all.

woofmachine · 03/10/2020 07:41

DP does not pay towards the car, but it's more about attitude to use, expecting a taxi service for social things as well as some nightshifts when public transport is readily available.

Fortunately, it’s not a once chance only decision. Don’t replace the car for now, and see how much you miss it. You can always buy one in a few months time, if you get fed up with lugging bags from the supermarket etc.

As others have said, car club or taxi, look at online deliveries and maybe even a cargo bike. You may well be able to live without it. Well, you know that you can, because you've not used it since February.

Not your DH's decision then. Tbh I would be annoyed at being the only driver, it's one of those things I think you should share in a relationship unless there is some specific reason one person can't drive, so if you don't want a car there is no car. Your DH learns to drive or starts budgeting for Ubers if he doesn't want to take public transport.

nosswith · 03/10/2020 09:45

A taxi or minicab can be used for shopping, a car hired when on holidays if you choose somewhere without good public transport.

Sensible decision in my opinion.

Dexysmidnightstroller · 03/10/2020 10:08

Being the sole driver when you have young children is a crashing headache and grossly unfair. He should learn.

Fortunately, it’s not a once chance only decision. Don’t replace the car for now, and see how much you miss it. You can always buy one in a few months time, if you get fed up with lugging bags from the supermarket etc. This. If you live in a town and have decent public transport then why not. Give it a go and see how it works for you (other adults can sort themselves).
