After a brief period of "we're all going to die" hedonism in April when I drank like a Sailor and ate like a King I have focused on a healthy diet and exercise regime. Lost 8kgs and felt much better.

But this last week has been so hard and bleak. Cold, wet, nothing in the diary and a shitshow of news. So bad habits have slipped back in. Crisps, cheese, wine, bread and no exercise. So annoyed with myself.

Please aibu to ask for help to get back on track? Please....

I think that’s common as the weather changes. You don’t want to exercise in the cold/wet, there’s less daylight, in the hot summer you’re happy with light salads and meals because it’s too hot to cook - whereas you want stodge when it’s cold and wet. It’s tricky!

MushMonster · 02/10/2020 21:38

Well done on your 8 kg loss!
Exercising outdoors will be more challenging, but it should not make difference indoors. Soups can be really low calories and full of yummy veggies. I am planning to have soup most days for dinner. They are filling too.
You do not want to waste all thr hard work that goes into a diet/ exercise plan.

DorisDaisyMay · 02/10/2020 21:49

Go to exercise tomorrow. Don’t think about it just do it. Get up and go to a class in the morning.

Drink two litres of water.

Plan your meals for the week and get the food in.

If you over think this you will get in the way of the action you need to get the ball rolling in the right direction.

Like Nike says ‘just do it’!

CyberNan · 02/10/2020 21:53

if losing 8kg and feeling much better is not a good enough incentive to eat healthier and exercise, surely there is very little a bunch of strangers can do to motivate you.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/10/2020 21:54

Today I've had
2 croissants and jam
Small bowl of muesli with full fat milk
1/2 bag of twirl bites
2 hob nobs
Curry super noodles
Random slice of ham
Small fish and chips
Can of full fat Sprite
Whole box of Lindt salted caramel balls

I am now basically 98% sugar and feel like utter shit. Really hoping my usual desire for clean eating returns tomorrow as I will be the size of a house if I carry on like that!!!

LishaFlynn · 02/10/2020 21:56

Thats a bit harsh CyberNan 🤣. Actually the replies so far have made me feel a LOT better! Firstly that it is ok to have a wobbly right now but also given me a kick to get back on it tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies!

Me too FusionChefGeoff! Tomorrow is another day...

PestymcPestFace · 02/10/2020 22:00

@FusionChefGeoff we all have days like that, no problem.
Long term life style like it, eeew heck.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/10/2020 22:29

As I often repeat to others some wise words I saw somewhere round here - if we forget to brush our teeth one day, we don't throw our hands up in the air and say 'right that's it I'm not brushing my teeth ever again' we just brush them the next day!!

I'm blaming hormones as I'm also bloated as hell (which is really helping the body image issue) and coming out in ginormous spots all over my face.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 02/10/2020 23:14

God, I feel your pain.

Was really motivated all through hard lockdown to get as fit and healthy as possible, to maximise my Covid (and winter bugs) fighting chances.

Managed to keep it up pretty well until chronic pain condition relapsed 3 weeks ago, walks and home exercise became impossible until pain relief sorted, weather changed and old habits are now sneaking back.

Way back when, I suppose we'd be pre-loading with as much stodge to tide us over brutally tough winters. Hibernation instincts remain hardwired.
(That's my excuse completely amateur theory anyway!)

Love risotto and stews with a passion, but am experimenting with cooking up comforting soups instead.
Packed full of beans, pulses and veg etc. but adding lots of strong, punchy flavours.
Eaten with a multigrain cracker or two.
(Poor substitute for buttery mash, but...)

And homemade dhal served with mixed grains & veg is good and warming.
As it's nutritious and low-fat, you can fill up with decent helpings, thus don't feel deprived.

Also been tweaking fruit crumble toppings to use oats instead.

New discovery:
When only brownies will hit the spot, these fractionally healthier versions are surprisingly delicious, squidgy and hot from the oven

TBH, in these current strange and anxious times, I'm concentrating on mental wellbeing. Which (for me) means un-learning food guilt and punishing regimes.

No judgment of those who swear by strict calorie-counting regimes and banning all forms of sugar and/or carbs...each to their own...just doesn't work for me.

As physical movement limited for now, and cardiovascular workouts out of the question, I'm struggling with the "well, just move more" mentality spouted by 80% of health media .

I wish I bloody could...

Meantime, I'm getting a lot of reassurance and nice supportive group community via live Zoom 'mindful self-compassion' meditation sessions.
Helping immeasurably with my anxiety and stress levels. Would recommend them to anyone else suffering same.
(They're totally free as well).

I'm definitely in the 'food for pleasure' camp, though!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 02/10/2020 23:16

@LishaFlynn,

Good God, I'm so sorry...it seems my post turned into a ruddy thesis length.

This is the hardest time of year to eat healthily and exercise - it's getting noticeably darker and colder and your body is telling you to lay down fat stores for winter. Stay strong and if you get through to Christmas you'll be fine.

lazylinguist · 02/10/2020 23:32

I think the key in winter is to eat plenty of warming, nourishing and delicious stuff like soups and stews, which are much more comforting in the miserable weather than crisps and cake anyway, as well as healthier!

Asterion · 02/10/2020 23:33

This weather has got me eating absolute crap Blush

You are not alone!

FusionChefGeoff · 03/10/2020 10:25

Right - after yesterday's debacle I am going to do a HIIT workout now. Usually if I've done something healthy I'm less likely to sabotage later.

Still got lots of chocolate in the cupboard though and I have zero willpower. Oh well!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 03/10/2020 16:08

Well done, @FusionChefGeoff! You inspired me to add into my day some gentle stretching exercises. Will try and do so regularly this week.

I managed my meditation session, too.

Both positive.

And then I discovered a forgotten half jar of Nutella, and...

I feel you OP. I have been so good since August but this week has been hellish with work, homeschooling (just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water...) and being on the blob. I've given myself a free pass to hit the fuckit button and have a week off. Back on it next week. I like the toothbrushing metaphor from a PP.
