To think it should be easier in 2020 to have two phone numbers?

I have an iPhone, which is my personal number, and a Samsung Note 9 which is my work number.

I don’t want to carry two big phones all the time.

I want to be able to divert the work phone (calls, texts, WhatsApp) to my other phone at weekend and evenings, or pick those things up on a watch and use the personal phone as my main phone.

Why does this appear to be impossible in 2020. I don’t mind spending up to a grand on a watch if it will help.

Dual sim phones aren’t an option. I need to be able to demo iOS and Android to clients.

Slightly confused as to what's the problem. You can divert calls from one mobile to another. What's app is a slight pain but assuming your work WhatsApp is group chats and/or a small number of contacts the easiest thing is just to have both your numbers in each group.
You say dual SIM isn't an option because you need to be able to demo both to clients - how are you going to do this if you also don't want to carry two phones? Or if this is just about weekends, are the above options not sufficient?

Ginfordinner · 02/10/2020 20:19

Or buy a decent phone with dual SIM cards. My Samsung Galaxy S10 has that option.

If you can show me how I get text and WhatsApp from both numbers onto one phone then it’s problem solved

Diverting phone calls is easy.

WhatsApp and texts isnt

Thanks

I divert my work phone to my personal phone during the week and switch off the divert evenings and weekends. Not sure what the issue is? We have a team WhatsApp group, and I have a couple of others with peer colleagues, I just have both numbers in them and notifications off at the weekend on my personal phone. I don't know anyone who texts other than my dad.

BubblyBarbara · 02/10/2020 20:22

Carry two smaller phones then

LadyCatStark · 02/10/2020 20:22

It’s not impossible, DH does it. I’m not sure how though sorry.

BertieBotts · 02/10/2020 20:25

If you need one of each anyway, then surely the problem is solved! You don't need two numbers, you need two OSes. I imagine dual boot would work in theory on a modern phone, but you'd have to root/jailbreak it and I expect for a work phone that isn't allowed.

You ought to be able to set up call and text forwarding quite easily for the evenings and weekends. Whatsapp doesn't offer any forwarding that I'm aware of, but perhaps you could link it to a PC? Or could you just not look at those messages until Monday?

I think it's not very common to want 2 numbers to the one phone, on Whatsapp you can't do it. I think most people generally have 2 phones for work purposes and would usually prefer to switch the work phone off or leave it behind on evenings/ weekends/ holidays, checking it as and when they wanted rather than having it with them all the time, otherwise they'd just use their personal number as their work number. It depends on the job I suppose but generally I'd assume people divert calls/ txts and then if they have other apps they need to use they check the other phone when at home rather than carrying it around.
What I'm getting at in a rambly way is that I think there might not be enough of a market for it.

Bargebill19 · 02/10/2020 20:33

I think you can do it on what’s app via groups? So you import the other telephone number into what’s app on one phone. You would also need all corresponding contacts on the same phone. Sorry I’m not very clear in describing it.

Nacreous · 02/10/2020 20:36

I think I would be tempted to divert calls, and work on the assumption that if it's a genuinely urgent work query someone will call me if they don't get a reply to their text or WhatsApp. If it's not a genuinely urgent query it can wait til I'm home and check my work phone.

Is that an option you could consider?

AvoidingRealHumans · 02/10/2020 20:36

I have 2 WhatsApp apps with 2 different accounts on my Samsung phone, in the settings its called dual messenger. I would assume iPhones can do the same (hopefully) as for diverting texts after a quick Google it suggests that there is apps for that but I have no idea if they are secure or work.
You are right, in 2020 you would expect what you need to be doable.

Zilla1 · 02/10/2020 20:55

I might have mis-read but Wwhy do you think dual SIM phones involve swapping SIMS in and out every evening and weekend, OP?

CatherineCawood · 02/10/2020 20:58

I have a dual SIM phone. Glaxy S10. Love it. Work sim and my sim both in. Can use work data when mine runs out Grin👍

TrickorTreacle · 02/10/2020 21:23

"I need one of each and don’t want to be swapping sims every evening and weekend."

OP: a dual-sim phone isn't like a single-deck cassette player. You don't have to keep changing the sim cards over. Treat it like a double-deck cassette player, where both sims are inserted at the same time and you can choose which to use in the phone. The Samsung S10 was already mentioned as being dual-sim. You can sell one of your 2 existing phones (or even both) to get some money back after buying a S10 or similar.

Redwolf1 · 02/10/2020 21:23

I may be ignorant but cant you download WhatsApp again? I'm sure you can. When my husband was without a smart phone for a while I had two WhatsApps on my phone. His and mine, different phone numbers to one phone

Thanks. I know how dual sim phones work (I sell them as part of my business)

I need an iPhone and an android phone in the week to deon different versions of apps to clients. At the weekend I would rather just carry one phone and have all calls, texts and WhatsApp messages (not group messages, this is the main way my staff, clients, friends, family and suppliers contact me) on one handset. Or a handset and a watch with a sim in it.

As I suspected it doesn’t seem to be possible

Dont k ow about iPhone but Samsung g you can se up 2 accounts for whatsapp/messaging no problem it's a default feature.

You can also just bug a dual sim phone or use an esim number.

Go to settings then read the manual for your so for further help

Elsewyre · 02/10/2020 21:35

Oh sorry yeah due to your bizarrely specific requiwrnts to have 2 entirely different OSs you will need two devices because of the obvious

LittleOwl153 · 02/10/2020 21:38

Why not go with the dual sim route so that you only use 1 handset mainly - but then stick a simple paygo/minimal contract sim in the other so you can still demo but not use it as such.

LittleOwl153 · 02/10/2020 21:39

but yes I can install 2 versions of WhatsApp with 2 numbers on my Samsung too.... not sure about the txt messages etc.

Alaimo · 02/10/2020 21:39

OP, I don't know exactly what apps you need to demonstrate to clients, but do you need one of your current sim cards to be able to demonstrate these apps?

Otherwise, would you be able to have both your work and personal sim in a dual sim phone, and simply buy a cheap PAYG sim for your other phone (without actually using that sim for phone calls, whatsapp, or texts)?
