To think wtf is wrong with trolls

OverTheRainbow88 · 02/10/2020 18:07

Recently I’ve read so many posts (often sad- missing child/being treated badly, being abused etc) and then after people spend ages giving sound advice the posts are taken down for being a troll.

What is wrong with these people? Do they need professional help?

I need to aquaint myself with the latest trolls. I haven't been on here much at all, I imagine COVID has stirred them up a bit. Do we have trolling about that now?

vodkaredbullgirl · 03/10/2020 16:29

There is 1, who posts about her mum either beating her up or trying to drag her back home.

I miss the plimsole ones.

Yup
SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/10/2020 16:35

The best troll was the one who had thread deleted as a troll and then came back to make "was that thread a troll? why do people troll, what's wrong with you" thread😂
Top marks there

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2020 16:37

The last one I remember is the one about teachers not letting children have a wee in the middle of the lesson troll I think-almost a daily treat that was.

Interesting article on what makes troll tick, the researchers included women and men.

''The dating app troll, like the online troll, is sadistic, psychopathic, and dysfunctionally impulsive.''
''''...researchers March and colleagues (2017) sought to identify factors which would predict trolling behavior. They sought to understand the relationship among the components of the Dark Triad (narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy), sadism (which when added to the Dark Triad is called the Dark Tetrad), and dysfunctional impulsivity.''''

Sealions? Is that a typo or jargon that I don't know?

TheSeedsOfADream · 03/10/2020 16:58

Seeds' Guide

  1. The Poo Troll- if it's not in General Health and is giving lascivious detail, usually involving accidents at work/in restaurants/nice shops. It's the PT
  2. The Schoolchildren and Toilet troll. Posts as a concerned parent whose daughter (Note: it's always a girl, because this ain't no mammy, it's a perv who gets his sadfuck rocks off talking about little girls wetting their pants) isn't allowed to go to the loo.
  3. Twins. Always born premature, hanging on by a thread. This one is often the fucking cunt the Bereavement Troll. For whom every God anyone believes in has reserved a special place in the fires of hell.
  4. The Creative Writer. Often has a long involved story running to five threads which gets more and more dramatic as the fans lap it up. If there is any chance of it dying a death, something very terrible (or terribly funny) happens.
  5. The bus troll. This one gets shouted at on buses, thrown off buses, or, sometimes stands up on a bus to defend someone else. Easily spotted. Involves the whole bus clapping and cheering. And drivers getting sacked.
  6. The Thrupence till Friday troll. Self explanatory. There are people who have quite literally dined out on MNers for years.
iklboo · 03/10/2020 17:01

Is everything you say online porkies @BubblyBarbara? I'm thinking of your IKEA comment Grin (I'm joking!)

User36258 · 03/10/2020 17:08

It’s really weird, isn’t it? I’ve just seen another thread removed from the troll who posts about children’s cuddly toys being taken away from them.

A generous interpretation is maybe that they’re working through some unresolved trauma, but I expect it’s actually mostly people who are bored and unfulfilled just trying to provoke any kind of an emotional reaction.

''Sealioning is a type of trolling or harassment which consists of pursuing people with persistent requests for evidence or repeated questions, while maintaining a pretense of civility and sincerity. There was a troll thread a few weeks ago about someone whose 17 year old son had repeatedly kicked a neighbours puppy . I was really upset about this . Came back the next day to see how the little dog was and the thread had disappeared.

I agree OP I really don't understand why people do these things .

Was this one where the OP's partner was using this as a form of discipline towards her DC? This one also upset me

Some people will do anything for attention.

Or money.

User6904439225 · 03/10/2020 17:24

This is a good article on "Munchhausen by Internet"
www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/05/faking-cancer-online/588334/

Many people do it simply because of the attention. Everyone gets a small dopamine kick when someone likes, replies or acknowledges their post. MN is a place where you can quickly generate tons of engagement with relatively little effort so many people might be addicted to that kick. Many probably don't set out to be trolls but realised they love the adrenaline rush of coming back to new replies and advice. This is often seen by OPs who post replies in succession trying to bump their own thread.

Another OP here started at least three threads that are extremely similar to each other on several consecutive days. Unsure if that was a troll (probably not) but it had a mixture of mental health issues, physical illness and parenting problems. She received a ton of advice/attention and went on to start many more threads that had different titles but basically about the same problems.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 03/10/2020 18:34

I nearly started a similar thread yesterday. About half the threads I looked at were downright dodgy.

It's not just the pervs, the beggars and the creative writers. What about pick a topic bingo to get mumsnetters frothing? Benefits bashing, baby weaning, customer service, poor teacher/nurse.

I report plenty and still get caught out. I suppose it comes back to, if it doesn't sound true, It very probably isn't. And we should all be wary of giving more of our time, emotions or money than we can afford.

OverTheRainbow88 · 03/10/2020 18:51

One troll posted 3 days in a row about whether or not they should let their teenage daughter sleep In their bed as their daughter Asked to by would not say why...

I remember that one 😂 my favourite for weirdness was the one who kept posting about realising “she” had spent the whole bike ride with her skirt tucked into her knickers. Obviously some sort of fetish but it did amuse me whenever it popped up.

I’m not a fan of the ones clearly scraping for people to share sex stuff though like the one the other day trying to get people to talk about underage sex.

It’s tricky with trolls though because I used to be a big fan of the old “welcome to Mumsnet, OP” to signal to people that it was a troll but then the other week it happened to me when I’d namechanged (because I didn’t want people I’d already spoken to irl who I know come on here to recognise my post and then know my username and read my other posts). MNHQ deleted the accusation before anyone piled on me but i wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of it when they aren’t as fast.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/10/2020 19:12

I am Shock at what people share!
Not just sex. Seriously, I am pretty sure people would share their passwords if asked🤷🏻

Belledan1 · 03/10/2020 19:19

I think the one yesterday about the 13 year old going missing was the same person as the one that asked for shopping on line. It was the way they agreed with suggestions in the same style.

Sparklesocks · 03/10/2020 19:19

Unhappy people desperate for attention

That one is still running. I didn't think it was a troll.
I did send money once £10 it may or may not have been a troll.
They messaged me with a thank you 3 times it wasn't a lend I've been broke before.
I didn't make a habit of it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/10/2020 19:33

We also have work clothes one😂

AdelaideK · 03/10/2020 19:39

The troll who looks so young and child like confuses me. It's such a weird thing to troll about.

The piss and period trolls are grim.

DD being hit by a parent at a sleepover
