PIP assessment - are my educational achievements relevant?

Mulling over my DLA to PIP telephone assessment and what I should and shouldn't have said. I was surprised to be asked about my qualifications, especially as I'm ancient. My first DLA application had to go to tribunal as the report basically said if I was intelligent enough to complete it I clearly wasn't ill. Since I'd spent 14 months under section on a psychiatric ward (with head teachers, doctors and shipbuilders amongst others) we successfully argued that there was a difference between intelligence and mental illness. No doubt they will turn me down, again, but it seems like I'm penalised for working hard when it was possible.

The advice on recording I was given was that personal telephone calls can be recorded for your own use, which the benefits and working site agrees with. There has also been a successful case against the DWP with evidence from the secretly recorded f2f. So that is as clear as mud

Update on the above info from Benefits and Work

In yesterday’s newsletter we told you that IAS (Atos) began audio recording all PIP telephone assessments from 21 September

*This was based on evidence that Therese Coffey, secretary of state for work and pensions, gave the Work and Pensions Committee on 30 September.

However, the DWP have now informed us that claimants must ask to have their assessment recorded, it will not be done automatically

You are likely to need to arrange this in advance. The earlier you request a recording the better, as a new appointment may need to be arranged.

A DWP spokesperson told us “This is not a pilot and is something that will eventually be rolled out nationally. The process is just not yet live in areas covered by Capita but will be shortly.”

But we have already heard from one claimant who requested two days ago that their assessment be recorded.

Our member says that their assessment, which was due to take place today, was immediately cancelled and could not be rebooked because the assessor did not wish to be recorded.

Our member was then told that maybe he would now have to wait for a face to face assessment instead.

We raised this issue with the DWP who told us:

IAS have established a process where telephone assessments can be recorded and therefore no claimants are being told they must wait for a face to face assessment.

You may still consider it sensible to record the assessment yourself just in case the DWPs recording goes astray. Though you will need to do this covertly as the DWP will not give permission.

Thanks for that information BlankTimes well worth knowing about!

Sounds like they were trying to intimidate the customer, by telling him that he would then have to wait for a face to face assessment. I'd love to know the reason behind why the interviewer didn't wish to be recorded!

Seems that as usual, they're trying to wriggle out of anything that benefits the customer!

Whilst it was never a right there was always an option to tape f2f assessments IF you could find an assessor to agree as the vast majority refused. Since I wasn't told that my assessment was being recorded by them I'm assuming it wasn't- although it wouldn't be the first time there were double standards
