To think dd4s school shoes should last longer than 3 weeks!

I bought these for Dd4 (reception). She’s worn them for 3 weeks. They cost me £40 from an independent shoe shop, they are the Male petasil.

Shouldn’t they last longer than 3 weeks? Dh doesn’t think so as she plays a lot.

What would you do? Buy more?

That will probably just polish up fine.

cheesecurdsandgravy · 02/10/2020 08:37

They need polishing. The leather itself looks ok.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 02/10/2020 08:38

Looks like she’s stopping scooters with them! Mine do that too! Maybe polish them, it’ll return the colour.

Seeleyboo · 02/10/2020 08:38

Get used to it. Mine needed new shoes every 6 weeks. 3 kids at 40 odd quid a pair every 6 weeks. It's just how kids threat them.

DameCelia · 02/10/2020 08:39

But they aren't ruined Confused.
They need to be polished.
School shoes polished every weekend is standard?
When I was at school it was daily, I'm a slattern so only do once a week. Smile

Mysa74 · 02/10/2020 08:39

My daughter did that first day back. I wasn't impressed, she's nearly nine!

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 02/10/2020 08:41

My husband does polish them every few days, think that’s why he’s not bothered about them 🙈

All school shoes have always looked like that after a few days’ wear, you just need to get the shoe polish out. It smells lovely and will have them looking new in no time! For deeper scuffs, rub the polish in in small circles with a cloth, then buff it with a brush or clean cloth.

CarrieBlue · 02/10/2020 08:42

They need polishing, properly with polish rather than one of those easy shiner sponge things.

borageforager · 02/10/2020 08:43

My 9 year old’s Clarks shoes have the sole peeling away from the leather already. 4 weeks. She doesn’t scoot in them!

MinesAPintOfTea · 02/10/2020 08:50

I always get the ones with rubber covering the toes. Polish them and wait until there's homes before replacing

AlwaysCheddar · 02/10/2020 08:56

My kid had shoes like that and I was like wtf until I saw her standing and scraping her shoes whilst she queued to go into school as she was bored!!

MJMG2015 · 02/10/2020 08:56

You definitely need to be using proper polish on them, not the paint on crap.

What exactly do you expect them to do to the shoes to protect them from
Your child scraping the tops sling the ground? Have you never taught her
Not to use her shoes to stop her scooter/swing/playing football on the tarmac/whatever the hell she's doing?

'She plays a lot'. Yes, kids do, they need to be taught how to treat their shoes though?

MJMG2015 · 02/10/2020 08:58

I was just going to come back & say that. It's not at all uncommon to see kids deliberately scraping their shoes along the ground when bored (one enlightened me that 'it's cool to watch the colour change' 🤦🏻‍♀️)
RepeatSwan · 02/10/2020 09:00

I don't see the problem, they just need polishing.

Either buy shoes that are tougher with a rubber bumper, or polish them more often, or tell your child that they mustn't play because you care about tidy shoes more than her having fun!

Shoes get scuffed. Soles falling off is another matter.

RedskyAtnight · 02/10/2020 09:01

So the shoes are perfectly fine other than being scuffed up at the front. Normal. You don't replace shoes until the DC grow out of them or there is an actual hole in them!

Clymene · 02/10/2020 09:05

She's scuffed the toe of the shoe. Did you expect them to be coated in Kevlar or something? Confused

Pootles34 · 02/10/2020 09:05

We always get the ones with the rubber bumper.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 02/10/2020 09:08

I don't think you should write them off just yet! They're not unwearable.

On a side note I bought DS some Treads shoes this year and they look as good as new so far. We usually go to Clark's but the queues for measuring were ridiculous. www.treads-shoes.com

AriettyHomily · 02/10/2020 09:15

DTs used to look like that - they liked climbing walls. Scuff remover and polish will sort them.

Seeline · 02/10/2020 09:15

They just need a decent polish (proper stuff out of a tin, using cloths and brushes).

My DCs shoes always lasted a year unless they had a really big growth spurt. At least weekly polishing with mid week top ups for emergency treatments 😁

Foobydoo · 02/10/2020 09:18

I get dd the clarks patent shoes and they last the majority of the school year. They did for dd1 too.
I am lucky in that they both have slow growing feet.
I used to get the ordinary leather ones for dd1 until one year they only had patent in stock. I was reluctant as I thought they would scuff but they didn't.
The ordinary leather would be scuffed by Christmas whereas patent ones still look new after 6 months wear. Dd plays out in them and rides her bike in them, sometimes wears them at weekends yet they still look good.

EachPeachPearSums · 02/10/2020 09:19

They are but leather and posh soft leather at that. You're going to need to buy tougher shoes with a rubber bumper or accept they will look like that after a week. Kids are hard on shoes. I agree with pp that looks like scooter stopping. The only shoes I found that withstand being used as brakes are Keens.

Houseplantmad · 02/10/2020 09:22

🤣🤣

GameSetMatch · 02/10/2020 09:24

They look fine, a bit of shoe polish and they will look like new again. It’s surprising how many people don’t polish shoes.
